Title: Not a motorcycle trip but...
Post by: flatfour on March 12, 2015, 08:49:15 AM
I'm off to Biggin Hill shortly for the "Spitfire Experience". Today is a private tour of the restoration hangar and a sit in an airworthy Mark 9 Spitfire that is currently appearing on the display circuit, hosted by one of the pilots that flies the aircraft. I intend to go back again in the near future for a flight in one of the (very few) surviving two seat trainer variants.

If I had thought that the weather might be suitable for both, I would have booked the two events together. I thought that the mid - March weather would not be so good as it has been (at least here in the east). At present we have bright sunshine and around 7c.

Big Time jealous of you-have a brilliant time, I used to spend a lot of time at Duxford around the type and back then it was Nick Grace who was so central to the preservation of the type. I seem to remember (maybe incorrectly) that the two seaters were ex Irish Air Force Mark VII's that were used as trainers in the late '40's early '50's.  Enjoy -then figure out how to get a Merlin into a GTR 1400! :punk:

Colin, I'm not a fanatic when it comes to stuff like that but I have to admit it would be one of those life experiences that would be well worth the effort. Have a great day.

A slightly envious Wolf.

Charlie, it was quite superb. We were offered the chance to fly yesterday as one of the display pilots turned up unexpectedly and a two - seat aircraft was available, however my friend has a heavy cold, so we decided to stay with the original plan.

We intend to return in a few weeks and have two Spitfires in the air together, one of us in each aircraft.

I have flown in the Mustang, so it should make an interesting comparison!

Charlie (and anyone else who is interested) I have tried to post a couple of photographs on here but they are kicked out each time, it says due to the time taken to upload. If you want to try yourself, send me an e-mail address and I will forward a couple to you (I know that this works OK, as I sent them to my friend last night).

Steve, many thanks. It's a good job that I'm not allowed to do anything dangerous like actually flying an aircraft, considering my inability to master tasks such as putting pictures on the site!
