Title: tyre pressure indicator
Post by: tyretothewire on May 21, 2011, 10:44:10 AM
Somebody ones told me that the tyre pressure information is a gimmick and unnecessary. Well I can confirm that it is not so.
Going to work friday mornining a red light suddenly appeared on the dashboard and the low pressure display clicking on and off. This was before I even felt anything amiss which was a good job because it came down to 5 psi within 100 yards. The hole took 3 bungs before it sealed long enough for me to follow the AA man to a motorcycle tyre dealer a couple of miles away.
Thirty minutes later back on the road £172 poorer but glad of that little red light but unhappy about the fact that the tyre I replaced had only done 3000miles and couldn't live up to my nickname.

I'm with you on this, I thought I'd got a leaking valve because I couldn't spot any damage or foreign bodies stuck in the tyre. Eventually the air loss got out of hand (indications from the TPS & red warning eventually on a daily basis). Found a 1.5" nail hidden (burried under the outer rubber); pulled it, plugged it, sorted. I'll change the tyre if I get any more air loss, but happy with it till then.

Saved me too a couple of years back.
Only -ve was that I had to wait 5 hours for the RAC to get to me.
Had bad floods that day and they were backlogged like crazy.
Apparently loads of eeediots thought that their Ford Focarses and Vauhall Rectums could drive through 3 foot deep water.  ;D
That kinda ruined my days blast through the Essex twisties.
Tyre was replaced due to damage to sidewall.
I like TPS, I love KiPass, I just wish the "LOW FUEL" warning didn't steal my gear indicator and switched to an estimated range display!

The low fuel warning is bad design.

TPS has saved my ass as well. Fortunately was a slow puncture, but the problem was couldn't get any nozzle to fit the non-flexible valve. That was a nightmare

I carry a right angled adaptor around with me now, and a load of 20p pieces! Whatever happened to free air?

I am with you Bondu ... Tesco air is free but BP charge 20p a go .. and they are making zillions every day ! Bloody rip off but typical I think of today and the world we live in  :'(
Before we had any sensors etc ... I had a rear wheel puncture, in fact the only one I have ever had, on my VFR on a dual carriage way at a decent speed .. felt like 10 people had climbed onto the back of the bike from out of nowhere .. was a huge nail right in the offside wall ... HOW on earth did it get in there I shall never know. Cut a long story short the Insurance Co contacted a local bike dealer who came and fetched me, took me to their place and very soon after I was off with some new rear rubber .... and I have to say they were very efficient so my experience of all that was top drawer. ;D

I agree with the low fuel warning, a right royal pain in the bum!
I was coming back to Leeds from Reading area, determined to do it on the tank.
Range 40 mile then the next thing I noticed was low fuel warning and my range had disappeared!
Tyre pressure thing is good too except the low battery warning that seems to come and go!

I has a blow out once, it was luckerly in the rear tyre, of a Honda Monkey Bike.

I was on a test run down  a dual carriageway, i manged to hold on to it, squerming everywhere.

Then i learnt, that OKO, is no good for high powered bikes.

New tube fitted and away we go, oh!! memories.

Cheers Flash.

TPS is good, out to work this morning rear pressure down to 39psi topped up to 42psi, headed home on 39psi further investigation revealed a very small nail in rear tyre. Haven't done a thousand miles on it yet  >:(

To repair or not repair that is the question?

Yeah a difficult quandary, my heart would say replace it but my wallet would be telling my heart to shut up!

Suppose it depends just how likely the small hole is going to dwell on your mind and affect your confidence on the bike and its handling. In a perfect world, I guess we would all immediately change the tyre.  :-\

Repair it.

Only real issue comes with water ingress or tyres that are 'old'.

Bike tyres tend not to get old so even minor water ingress shouldn't cause any problem
