Title: Time for a new tyre
Post by: Teacher on January 25, 2015, 08:15:42 PM
Hello everybody

I think it's time for a new rear tyre. I currently have  pilot road 2 fitted ( I think) to front and rear
Rear tyre has now done 6k ( along with front) and is about shot in the centre.

Whats the latest views on rubber?

Can I fit the latest PR4 to the rear and leave the 2 on the front for example

And what price do people think i should be paying?

thanks for any input

Just yesterday I ordered a pair of PR4 GT tyres from ebay for £248.50 from round and black. It's the send time for these and I prefer to put a pair on rather then just a rear, my mate who fits them free for me has the front for his bike so it suits me.

Just my 2p worth.

Alan

Let me put it how I see it -

You have a bike worth thousands and you're quibbling about a few pounds for tyres ??

Tyres keep you in contact with the road and you are thinking about mixing brands and therefore unrecognisable and untested combinations, please don't do it, also I think (not 100% sure) your insurance wouldn't pay out for any claim once the assessor noticed mismatched tyres.

ive been running mixed tyres for years and never had a problem, I always seem to find a better tyre at each tyre change and im blown if im throwing away a perfectly good tyre .

Went to the alps last summer with a new pr4 on the back and my bridgestone on the front, never noticed anything, 130mph autobahn, -5 up in the alps , +40 in Italy .

ran mixed tyres on my zzr1200 and that was fine too,

don't listen to them, obviously always aim to get matching tyres , but certainly don't bin a perfectly good one to get you there.

No I'm certainly not quibbling over a few pounds, in fact cost is not an issue. It's just that i don't see the point of swapping out a perfectly serviceable front tyre. I've been perusing the tyre thread and someone says they consulted michelin on mixing versions and they said not a problem. I don't intend to mix brands; i have Michelinn currently and would put anothe Michelin on the rear to " match" the front.
if i changed brands then I would change the pair.
My question really is what experience have people had regarding the latest tyres out there, re grip and longgevity, as mine have been on since summer 2013, and technolgy moves on .
My mate uses Maxxis tyresw and swears by them, but I don't believe they are classed as a premium brand

You won't find better than the PR4 GT.

You'll be perfectly OK with a 2 on the front and a 4 on the back (I ran 3 front and 4 rear). It's not optimal but as you say why bin a good front?

So would I, in fact I've done that before and had the tyres snapped up. The buyer lived near Glasgow, I live in West Yorkshire and they even came to collect!

I would do the sensible thing, and just fit a rear to match your perfectly serviceable front.

Sorry but comment about Insurance not paying for mismatched tyres is incorrect. Providing the tyres are road worthy and legal its nothing to do with insurance. Having matching brands is preferable and individual preference. The rear tyre always wears nearly twice as quick as front in any case regardless of brand, so in reality you only get a matching pair of tyres for 5 or 6000 miles. :sleep1:

If having mis-matched tyres was an issue for insurance I reckon nearly 50-60% of cars on the road would fall foul.

What is an issue is fitting wrong size, wrong load capability etc. It has to be OEM or tyre manufacturer recommended equivalent.

mis-matched means radial and cross-ply to me.
