Title: Tyre Pressure Transponder - Low Battery Warning
Post by: exBanditOwner on January 19, 2015, 01:15:51 PM
Hello, had a rear tyre pressure monitor error this morning. low battery. flashed on the dash for a bit. then went off. Hoping it was due to the cold. -4ºC
anyone had similar experiences or know how to change the battery?

thanks

I had a quick run round on mine at the weekend and the error message came on but cleared after a bit of riding.  I dont know why.  I assumed it was the cold and the bike having been on its stand for 6 weeks

I have been having it on mine it stays on longer the colder it is.
They are supposed to have a 5 year life?.the dealers want about £300 I am lead to believe.
The older models the battery is soldered in there are some Picts on here somewhere about diy if you have the know how do a search.

i had the warning ip on mine,it was -5 at the time,it went out after a mile or so,then it appeared again about 6 months later,i took it to the dealer & it was replaced under warranty, they replaced the whole thing, not just the batteries.

Just had both mine replaced under warranty at 22 months old.  Exactly the same symptoms.  I'm told that the replacements should have a life of up to 10 years now as they have been redesigned

Best thing you can do is take them out at the next tyre change ,and put them in the cupboard, more trouble than they are worth,

Mine does it anywhere below 4 degrees. I'll swap the batteries next tire change.

Mine were replaced a couple of years ago, and I still get the message when it is cold.  Goes off after tires warm up.

not sure when Kawasaki changed to the sealed units" no battery change possible" but it was circa 2011/12 so just be aware of this before you embark on a diy battery instal.
Another point is that if you have the batteries changed on warranty they will put in the sealed units ,even if you have the non sealed units leaving you with a £300 bill next time they go  . best forfeit the warranty offer and save money in the long run

Got this warning couple of weeks ago in cold weather. Went off after half a mile. Spoke to the mechanic at my local independent about them replacing the battery when I get a new rear tyre- probably spring time- and decided will probably just have a standard valve put in. this is the only bike I've had with TPS and frankly  I don't see the point if " maintenance" of said items is made to be so difficult/ rip off price

that's a good point, just keep the old units for the next owner, after a while the once indicated PSI reading just rverts to a  -       im lucky in that mine are the changeable battery type and I can change the bats myself.

I agree when I had a puncture they showed me how quick I was losing pressure hole to big to patch.
Recovery was around £120 . I carry a compressor so kept refilling to get home and used the sensor display to stop and refill when down to 10 lb

seems to throw this error every time it hits -4ºC goes off when tyre warms up.

is this a sign of a weakening battery or something more sinister?

Mine has done this a few times, always the rear tyre. TPS changed under warranty (twice) now seems much better but still happens for a few moments on the coldest of rides.

Hey guys

quick question :

My understandaing is that 2 verions of the Sensor are available. The sealed and the non sealed.

Mine is a 2009 version, and on the microfiche I can see the PN being :

CHKM386696 SENSOR,TPMS 315MHZ

The latest version, which I assume is the sealed one has the following PN :

CHKM383446   SENSOR,TPMS 433MHZ

So my questions:

1) Can someone confirm that I have non sealed TPMS?

2) Is the new PN (CHKM383446) is the one for the non sealed version?

3) How do you explain the Mhz difference?

A bit lost on that topic and I would require someone to enlightent me :-)

Thanks

Hey

Thanks for this fast reply. This is what I was thinking.

Now, if I get the alarm to often (non only on cold winter days), shall I buy the 2014 version of the TPMS?

Would they be non sealed? Would they work ? (the frequency does not seems to be the same

Sincerely

Part Number     Hertz          Specification   Mark [A]
21176-024         434 MHz   EUR, AU, SEA   Blue
21176-027         315 MHz   MY                   Red
21176-025         315 MHz   US, CA, CAL   Green

This is for the original sensors.  DHAC on the new ones.

They may well be sealed and you would need a Kawasaki Dealer to program them to your bike.

Ok so the only solution is to go to the dealer, sign a check for 300€ and have a sealed solution again?????

This is realy crappy and not the way the Japanese bike maker usually works...

Hello

Yes I saw that solution. But How do I get the tyre out for 1h to do the repair?

I don't have a garage so if I go to a tyre shop I won't be able to leave the bike there for a couple of hours just to do this mod...

I am going to wait for both sensors to fails to do them at the same time

I haven't found a proper Tutorial. Do you have one?

Is there a way to delete the "Low pressure warning" from the display. My first ride this year and I had it all the time, so now I know the battery is low. I don´t need to be reminded all the time. It was +8C so it ought not be the temperature. Mine is an -08 if it helps.

One, you could wait for the batteries to completely die and the warning will go away..  However, they can linger for quite a while...years in fact.  Two, dismount both tires, remove the batteries from the sensors, install the sensors back or just put in a new valve stem (8mm), and mount the tires back.  Both accomplish the same thing.

the tyre can be opened up by using 2 g clamps and a small wooden wedges enough to get the tps out, with the tyre still on the bike , some pics on the site somewhere

I didn't have a smarty phone 35 years ago either.  I kinda like it.  I like DVRs, satellite TV, computers, all the stuff we have now.  Didn't have that 35 years ago either.  I like the sensors.  I even like KIPASS.  I don't miss points in cars or drum brakes.  I like my hybrid electric car.  Didn't have that 35 years ago.

I suffered for 3 years with the flashing "low battery" .. v annoying, but no way was I going to pay a fortune to buy new sensors, when it was only the batteries that caused the prob. In the end, J and S Cheshire (Kawasaki main dealer where I'd bought my bike) were brilliant. They replaced the batteries free of charge (I just supplied the new batteries) when they put new tyres on. Understandably they said that there could be no guarantees and that Kawasaki do not sanction splitting the sensor and then supergluing back together, but its worked perfectly. Just wish I'd done it 3 years ago.

I've had 1 puncture in 8 years ... on west coast of Scotland, miles from anywhere ... the Tyre Pressure sensor was great ... started flashing as soon as pressure got down to 30 ... I was then able to pump tyre up to 42 and carefully ride the 100 miles to Inverness watching the pressure fall v slowly. Personal preference I know, but I usually leave the display on "tyre pressure" and find it reassuring that they are at least approx right?
Title: Re: Tyre Pressure Transponder - Low Battery Warning
Post by: BigAlan on September 18, 2016, 12:21:30 PM
Likewise I always ride with the tyre pressure indicated, god knows what the actual psi is in them as my fancy dan tester says it's 42 and the sensors say 44, yesterday I had a ride and I reckoned the tyres were harder than they should be, I might take it to my local garage and see what there gauge says.

But I like the idea I know what's going on.

I agree with both the above.i like them  I had my compressor tested at my mates tyre shop it's 1/2 a lb out ( under ) alas he only does car tyres .
I had a puncture and the display kept me informed at 15 lb I reinflatted back to 42 and got home ok then replaced the tyre next day due to the size of the hole and it was the rear no plugs for me just temporary to get home

The standard battery is a CR2032 and it has soldered tabs on it, usually you can't get the tabs in the same exact place so if you can solder then is easy, you  can change them on the earlier type sensors as the plastic body comes apart after removing one tiny screw under the sticker, the latter type sensors are designed not to be taken apart, but believe me when my rear new type needs a battery I will be trying like hell to get it to bits rather than pay for a new one so even if I break it it won't matter.

Easy job.
Title: Re: Tyre Pressure Transponder - Low Battery Warning
Post by: virginiajim on December 04, 2016, 01:36:02 PM
I don't think the standard CR2032 has the tabs on it.   You have to buy it specially made and it has a different designation.  Some have said that they've got it a specialty battery stores..

http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en/battery-products/batteries-non-rechargeable-primary/394467?k=P668-ND

https://octopart.com/cr-2032%2Fvcn-panasonic-19088802

I used the digikey batteries on mine.  Hopefully you guys have a source.  If you buy a straight CR2032 and try to solder on the tabs it could damage the battery internally.  I think that the tabs on the existing battery are brazed on but it's been awhile since I did mine.  I also did it at a tire change.  I have a business near me that changes mc tires.  Had them take off the tire, fixed the battery, and then had them mount a new tire.  Only cost $20 (including balance) per tire.
Title: Re: Tyre Pressure Transponder - Low Battery Warning
Post by: BigAlan on December 04, 2016, 03:00:37 PM
I meant the battery is a CR2032 but has tabs, I agree the usual one you purchase does not have tabs and trying to solder onto them is almost impossible, here on eBay for example you can get the battery with tabs, they just won't be in the correct place hence the ability to solder is helpful.

Should have made this clearer.

More trouble than they are worth.

You know what theyre actually not. If you change them every tyre change the batteries are only £2 each and you actually dont even need to solder them as long as th tabs stay in contact with the battery and this is done simply with some small piece of doubled over card on top of each tab inside the sensor after the old battery is carefully removed and the new replaced.once the lid goes on the card is enough to hold the battery tabs on to the battery. I also wrapped unit around battery end with electrical tape once it was clipped back together. Just belt and braces on my part.  With the battery in the north position as you look at it theres a tab on the right and left side of the battery. The right tab sits under the battery the left tab sits on top and is the plus side. Make sure you put a tiny piece of electrical tape on the right side of the battery so the right tab only touches it underneath. This stops the battery shorting out. Its obviuos when you see it. I did both of mine in the tyre garage in half hour. So nothing to be scared of just look and apply yourself logically thats all. Its really not difficult. Fear is just an emotion which you can switch off if you want to then just get stuck into doing the job. If it helps just put on some pointy ears and have your name changed by deed poll to spock  :mfr_lol:
Anyway both mine are going strong and ive had no probs with them and dont expect to.

On my 08, they started complaining about year 2 and got progressively worse.  Finally switched them out around year 5 or so and not a peep out of them since then.  I think they had a very large batch of bad batteries to begin with.

Yes your tyre temperature gets warmer as you ride. This makes the air inside the tyre warm which in turn makes the sensor and its battery get warm. The battery getting warm will increase its power and the low battery warnin will go off. Itll do that for ages probably moayling

Heres is link With photo and info... I hope it is useful

:scooter:

a thought has occurred to me reading that link (hi by the way , I'll do a proper intro in due course).

This battery is a standard PC motherboard battery (hence the flylead)

Rather than cutting the connecter off and soldering the wires to the PCB inside the TPS why not remove the prongs, find a matching socket and solder that into the PCB.

That way when you want to do a battery replacement its a simple (once you've got to the TPS)  plug out/plug in job

There's been a lot said on this thread about replacing the batteries in a non sealed unit but no real mention of the sealed units themselves.
Has anyone replaced the sealed units because of low battery problems or is it safe to say that the sealed units are lasting a nice long while?

No sticky a battery is a battery which ever unit u use its just a way of mother kwak stopping battery replacements instead of unit replacements. Its just company profits being looked after thats all. Theres no mention that ive heard of to say they last any longer.
Sadly it just comes down to economics 😩

I am told the new sensors have the insides in epoxy whatever that means, if I have one go down I will try my hardest to get inside it and take a look to see if I can replace the battery before spending any pension money on a new unit.

Ive got 27 fingers and 11 thumbs but I completed the battery replacement first time using the batteries with the wires attached, go for it. My bike is 2009 reg and the transponders were held together by a small screw not a sealed unit.
