Title: Saying Hello
Post by: exBanditOwner on December 30, 2014, 08:07:02 PM
Hello forum people.
I don't have a GTR yet but i hope to in the near future. so will be lurking here for a while and soaking up your experiences and asking daft questions.

currently have a Bandit 1200 and it's great fun but time for a change - i've had it 12 years, my first bike.

Hi and welcome.

A good bike, the Bandit.  Tried and tested and stood the test of time.  Someone once said that the Bandit was the Ford Transit of the Bike World.  Not in a derogatory way, just that it has been around for ages and will go for ever.

If you do change to a GTR you won't be disappointed.

hoping to get a test ride tomorrow.

i'm hoping there is still a hooligan element to the gtr. not a lot like the bandit, just a bit.

Big Welcome, my last but one bike was a Bandit 1250, not as much soul as the air cooled 1200 I thought. The GTR has a hooligan element alright, mine seems to have an actual personality, sometimes as an animal (stroke it and it purrs) sometimes as a human. It seems to have moods and I have to figure out what to do and how to ride as a team-if you see what I mean! Oh yes, it definitely has personality!  It's absolutely brilliant and you will ,love it if you take the time to explore what it can do. Strewth I've gone all esoteric, maybe  I need to go for a lie down in a darkened room... Nurse, it's happened again, NURSE!... :mfr_lol:

Hello again,
well i've been for a test ride. And i really like the bike....

but..

i was expecting a still pocket of air with that fairing and all i got was wind noise and turbulence. it really put me off.
and the bars are a bit narrow for me. i have renthals on the bandit.

does anybody else suffer wind ( :mfr_lol:) noise? if so how did you get round it.

i'm 5'10" 178cm tall the screen is standard.

If your test ride bike had a standard screen on it then buffeting was virtually inevitable, virtually everyone on here of a similar height to you would have at one time or another experimented with after market screens. Personally I had the C Baileys on mine and it was terrific. Whenever I put the standard screen back on it was terrible.

Did you try the screen in it's LOWEST position?

i tried the screen in all all positions at all speeds. at one point i felt like i was being pushed forward!
the lowest position send wind straight at my neck. if i hunched down it was better but that's not a normal position for me.

I'm 6'4" and have a +6" screen on mine. I have 2" bar risers and wind noise and turbulence is not a problem.
If you want wider bars you will need to fit aftermarket bars. Someone makes a bar adapter for tube bars.
Either that or get Helibars but they are $£€$£€.

Thats an individual choice regards wind noise. Never bothers me and I don't wear ear plugs unless I'm on exceptionally long journeys.
A good quality helmet and background music keeps me alert.
I dont commute but do some long long days quite often.
Several screen options available and I found the MRA screen best for me with a lowered seat, i'm also 5'10.
If you watch some of the reviews on Youtube from the states, they actually talk quite easily while on their test runs from the dealers.
As for the bars, riser pull backs may help....

I put the old model screen on my newer one and at 5-11 tall the bufferting has gone ,can still put the screen up higher if it rains ,but screen fully up and you get pushed forward and the bike feels unstable at higher speeds espially on hard acelaration , I think the latest model is ment to fix the pushed forward. Feeling with the hole in the screen , :biker3:

I have an MRA screen with the wing on mine. Lower than the standard screen but no buffeting or stability issues. Tried putting the standard screen back for winter riding;- yuk! 1 ride and the MRA back on. I'm 6ft 4ins, broad shoulders and 16 stone. Agree with the comments comparing the original 1200 and the 1250 having had both. If someone knows where there's a decent naked 1200 though I could just squeeze one in the garage in front of the GTR and the DL650. Don't think the missus  :hammer:  would notice (I hope)

Now that is looks like i'm here to stay i'll do a proper introduction!

I have been riding motorbikes since i was 4 years old. All dirt bikes, and have had a few including the legendary CR500. I bought my first road bike a year after passing a direct access course. It was a naked Suzuki bandit 1200. i owned that for 12 year, doing all the servicing and modifications myself until i could't get anymore power out of it without going down the turbo or nitrous Oxide route. A friend had recently turbocharged his Bandit12 and i still overtook him under acceleration. thoroughly unimpressed with turbos, i installed a Wizard of Nos direct port nitrous oxide kit to mine. This gave an extra 50bhp at full throttle and brought the maximum bhp up to around 200. The bike was my only vehicle so it was fully insured with nitrous for the road. if anybody is interested in Nitrous then let me know, i can dispel a few myths.
I also have a 100cc scooter that i purchased for a charity run from Cheshire to the isle of Arran. The plan was to sell it afterwards, it only cost £100 but i've got so attached to it and it does get some funny looks. it's called the gruffaloscoot and you can see it in my avi.
I am changing jobs next month and will be travelling up and down the country training folk and whilst a nice car would be an option, i hate traffic and hate cars so decided i needed something that is capable of munching miles but didn't know what i wanted. Hayabusa was first choice ZZR1400 was second i sat on both at the bike shop and instantly dismissed them as uncomfortable. Along side the ZZR1400 was the GTR1400 - i'd never heard of it and it was huge but i thought i'd sit on it anyway and something just clicked.
The next weekend i was test riding it and i didn't like it - the following weekend i rode it again over roads i know for 2 hours and that changed my mind. Yes - i will probably change the screen in the future.
So i rode it home from the shop.
I'm enjoying getting to know it and look forward to many happy miles.
regards,
Neil
