Title: What fails on our bikes with high mileage?
Post by: Martin#30 on December 05, 2014, 03:38:21 PM
Afternoon all,

I have had a very enjoyable 59,500 miles on my bike since buying it 4 years ago. The poor thing is looking well used as I commute all year on it, and rarely break out the sponge, but I still love it and it keeps soldiering on.

I have no desire to change it, but I do need it to stay reliable as I use it for commuting and business. It was chequebook maintained by the supplying dealer up to 42k, but now doing it all myself.

What sort of things go on these as the miles pile on? I am happy feeding it the constant diet of wheel bearings, brake disks and shock strip/cleans that it seems to need. The reg/rec and battery failed 10k miles ago, but other than that, it has been great - original clutch, fork seals, head bearings etc.

Any thoughts on what typically goes, and when? What might be worth me trying to stockpile if they come up second hand? Radiator? Shaft drive assembly?

Cheers all,

Martin.

Martin,  Just keep on doing what you have done so far and the bike should go to the moon. Ride them right maintain them properly and you should have no major problems.  The engine is totally bomb proof, as is the gear box, so there should be no major bills on the horizon. Clean oil and filters at regular intervals and the bike should do mega mileage. I have never believed that stock piling bits is the right way to go.  You could keep the bike 10 years, and still have all the extra bits left over when you sell ( after 2 hundred thousand miles).     So just keep doing the right things, and fix it as and when required.

I would clean the gas filter or purchase a new one by 50k miles... (pull the fuel pump)..  Asif has a good write up on it.

+1
A mate of mine has in his collection a highly modified and tuned zzr1100, he has done all the servicing since day one and the last time we spoke the bike had completed over 103k miles with no real issues.

Regular oil and filter changes, grease any points and check the shims as advised, a 1400cc engine is a car sized unit so I would expect car mileage.

Cars don't do 10,500rpm. That said with care and maintenance should do 150-200k miles.

They'll go to 10.5K?  9K is about as high as I have pushed mine, through the gears.

Question, is 5K O/F changes good with synthetic?  the PO changed Mobil 1 every 3K mikes and I have passed that number. . .tp

Thanks all, I guess I shall just keep on riding it and see what happens over time. I am quite looking to forward to seeing 100,000 on the clock.

@Jim, good call on the fuel pump. My zx10r track bike has the same pump, and that stated to fail at 17k miles. That bike does spend most of its life bouncing off the rev limiter though. Also reassuringly, the only issue with the failing pump was at 11k rpm plus so no instant breakdown.

@tomp, the official service interval for oil changes 7,500 miles. The 3,250 interim services are just inspections. Up to you if you think it is worth doing it earlier for piece of mind.

Martin.

Thanks Martin.  I think changing full synth every 3K is a waste of money.  Guess I will save some this go round.  tomp

I do mine @ 7500mile intervals and use semi-synth as recommended in the manual. Did/do the same in my GTR1000 and so far have 180k on one motor and 120k on the current motor. The 1000's get 5000mile changes though but it is a much older design of motor.

I would have said radiator as a second hand one would be scarce. However looks like you can get them in from China now.

64,000 km - leaking shaft drive and valves gasket  :whistling:

That's normal maintenance  stuff though, isn't it?  C14's seem pretty bullet proof, because they don't have many of the electronics that bikes, like BMW's have.  Fewer doo daa's, fewer problems, down the road, right?  I keep praying  the servo brake unit on my 04 RT doesn't fail on me.  $2200 to repair.  The Kawi is more fun to ride, than the Beemer, anyway. . .

In terms of oil changes, I do mine every 5000 ish, or every year....  Mine is 4.5 years old now with 54000 miles, but it's unlikely to to the miles I used to do.

Biggest problem for me is the battery, but that because I use it to get to work at only 2 miles from home... :-(

Any good quality synthetic oil can easily go 7-8k miles before being changed. Some manufacturers spec changes at 10,000 miles now, because the tolerances in engines and oil filters are so good. I usually change every 5-7k, depending on how long the next road trip is...

I've seen a few GTR/Connie riders with that final drive leak. I had the valve cover/cam position sensor o-ring leaks. Both were covered under warranty, thankfully. One thing I've noticed is all the little nooks and crannies on these bikes, where dirt/gunk/salt can get trapped. I suppose this might cause corrosion issues long-term, so I try to keep my bike as clean as possible.

Keep riding it, change the oil, filters, etc. Grease the levers every once in a while. Change the coolant every few years. Check the valves at least once, and it should be good for half a million miles or so. Giving it a good Italian tune-up from time to time can't hurt either...
