Title: KTM Super Adventure
Post by: SirToU on November 15, 2014, 10:12:37 PM
Just been looking around at various things and looked at the KTM Website!

WOW, the stats on the KTM Super Adventure rival the GTR... first time thats happened on an adventure bike.

160 BHP KTM v 155 BHP GTR
140Nm KTM v 136Nm GTR
249kg Fully Fuelled KTM v 303kg Wet (+ fuel)  GTR

642bhp/tonne v 511bhp/tonne
or power to weight ratio of
0.642 bhp/kg v .511 bhp/kg......

there is a negative...... price.  £15999 v £13699.....

These are amazing stats and if I was really looking to replace the GTR, then it would have to be a serious consideration.

Title: Re: KTM Super Adventure - opinions
Post by: SirToU on March 06, 2015, 07:56:16 PM
Just going to bring this up again because..... I would like an opinion.....

I know there are members on here that have sold their GTR for other non Kawasaki brands.

I love my GTR, but its 5 years old, has 54000 miles and I'm really interested in a KTM adventure (1190)........

However, I'm really worried that the GTR (s) have been so good to us, its does everything, that I wonder whether a KTM 1190 adventure would be an equal.  I would hate to sell the GTR, with all its personal history, to find that I actually don't really like the Adv as my main bike.  Whenever, I've test ridden it, thats been my opinion, its a great toy, but I couldn't live with as my main bike, but the urge is still itching.......

Alternatively, Its likely that I could wait till Christmas, buy the KTM and have both - potentially mothballing the GTR temporarily until I'm convinced the KTM is a good replacement.  (or just keep both, but I guess SWMBO will get a bit upset with me).

So - Over to you - what do you guys think....... seeing as I've known some of you since 2008.

I have got a 2006 ktm superduke as a second bike ,it is without doubt the most fun exciting bike I have had the light weight and explosive power is thrilling to ride , but when serious touring is called for the gtr is king , the duke is so easier to ride fast on twisty roads and rides around the Lake District where the weight of the gtr becomes to much ,cornering on the gtr has to be precise ,where the duke just laughs and says is that all you got , try one you will be hooked ,I now have the best of both worlds with two great bikes ,both great in their own right , :biker3:

Neil, decisions, decisions eh?

On one hand you say that whenever you've test ridden the KTM it's been your opinion that its been a great toy so perhaps there's your answer, forget it and move on, however you've got that itch that obviously needs scratching so you have to take the plunge and give one a go. Ultimately, what do you have to lose, I would say nothing other than learning that you can put that curiosity to bed and move on or alternatively you may just discover that you've found you new best mate!

hmmmm....

Perhaps, I should mention the GTR isn't my only bike....  ;-)

I have a Kawasaki GTR1400, A Kawasaki Z750R, a 2005 Fireblade and a MSX125.  The other half has an ER6F.

I am thinking about selling the Blade to fund the KTM, but I've only had that 6 months.  it was a bucket list bike, its a nice bike but as with most sports bikes, its not particularly flexible in terms of what I can do with it......  ;-)  go fast!

Hi Neil,

I am in the same quandary as you, got a stable of bikes so really cant add another, i need to let something go and the KTM seems like it will do everything the GTR does, plus i get a new/newer bike with all the toys that KHI refuse to fit to their flagship tourer, ie cruise control, ride modes, active suspension etc (+30 ltr tank)

I will wait for a nearly new or ex-demo to become available as £16k is too salty for me.

i need to get an extended test ride to see if i can reach the floor (one of my bikes is a Tiger 955 and i am at the limit on that one) and if the journo hype is true or just marketing.

the test ride is like the first kiss with a new girlfriend, you just know that youre gonna want more and you start to see faults in your current g/f (bike) that you hadnt noticed before.

I didnt mean to be unfaithful but what temptation, please save me from myself

I did what you are contemplating.

Had the GTR - loved it, but fancied an adventure bike - as well as.

Bought a 1200GS - great bike, totally awesome, comfy, quick, sweet handling.  However, it wasn't a tourer.

Fate lent a hand and a small issue saw me at the BMW dealers (nothing wrong with the bike) not happy with an adventure bike and a deal to beat all deals was made for the GS and GTR against the K16.

I personally think the KTM is shit, but if you like adventure style you may be happy with one.

If you like tourers then think carefully about changing.

Been looking at the K16GT as well, as b4 £16k is too much for an occasional bike, they are now starting to appear as used albeit with above average mileages, but it proves that they are bought to ride. I think I'm ready fo a new toy!

yes, hhmmmmm, well....

A couple of years ago (2008/Pre GTR), when my BMW went wrong (Oh, they all do that Sir), I was lent a standard GS for a week and I loved it - except - I felt - it was so underpowered it is scary......  for me anyway, and the same goes for the most of the current range of the adventure (touring) bikes, with exception to the Multistrada and KTM, who are slowly getting there... - well the Super Adventure has arrived...  :-) - And to be fair, every time I've ridden any adv bike, I've really enjoyed it - especially the taller versions (GSA with ESP).

so for me the choice is really easy, but only the KTM is close to delivering something similar to the GTR.  However, there are some compromises....  pannier size, chain drive, and SWMBO's comfort -  But I could live with that (I think).

However, the GTR doesn't have any of those compromises, smooth, powerful, comfortable, and has loving history....  she's like a faithful labrador, always pleased to go out and clock up 500miles per day and still ask for more.

But I'm taking in Winston's comment - did it and went back to a touring bike, which leaves me at my first statement - its one to have in the garage, but its not a primary bike (for me)......  so my head and my heart are still in disagreement......  perhaps, so Debs comment - get both!  may have to happen......

Off to at least speak to a dealer.....  ;-)

Neil, the ONLY real way to decide whether a bike is for you or not is to get it out on an extended test ride, (I'm aware that you already know that) but it is the only real answer as one man's meat is another man's poison.

I just read a report on the KTM 1250 Super Adventure in April issue 'Bike' maga and its left me wondering why all the electronic gadgetry.

Coincidentally I read the following posting on the S10 site only the other day....it may interest you...bearing in mind that we don't all share the same opinion .

I just got Cycle World mag to catch up on the long term KTM 1190 Adventure and BMW GS Adventure comparo. Of course, they didn't want to throw the Tenere' in the mix. You will find out why. Here is a synopsis for those that don't get the mag.

In the first installment a few months ago they drooled all over these bikes after a whopping 2500 miles.  Just gushing with praise and superlatives. The KTM was $18,134,and the BMW $21,671. They made a big deal about the 'high quality' and 'awesome reliability' of these 'premium brands'. They hardly rode them, yet didn't have one bad word about them. Oh boy, was that going to change. Big time.

So in the latest installment (and I'm sure last) they rode them off-road a bit more, and the miles racked up, and the reality hit home. The KTM was hard starting at 8000 miles so they took it in to the dealer to check it out. They found the valves 'tight', and they 'claim' the motor consumed enough dust to require a complete top end rebuild, which they had to do. The motor was shot and the dust did it in. I call BS on that one. CW said the air cleaner element was looking good when they took it apart. Supposedly an 'air box problem" did the motor in, but unless the air box was shoveling in dirt, I think the dust claim is a stretch. I think it is more like 150 horsepower problem. I'd bet my life that motor will burn up when ridden hard, and it did. Horsepower and longevity aren't used in the same breath, and the KTM died quick. Also $1,641 bucks for 'Maintenance Costs'. They have a whopping 11,837 miles on it, and at 8000 miles the motor top end took a crap. Sounds peachy. I'll take two.

Not to be outdone in the overpriced, crappy quality race was the BMW. They simply dropped it over once and cracked the valve cover, even though the bike supposedly has crash bars. Next the horn button was broken. To fix that was $441 with labor which CW called 'totally ridiculous'. Really? I thought that was the point of the Beemer??  :-*
Anyway they looked over the Beemer further and found both front and rear shocks blown and a toasted clutch totaling another $1,458 in parts alone. In 11,000 miles the BMW tallied up $1,858 in maintenance costs, and $3,173 in repair costs. Right about 5 grand in 11,000 miles. That is on top of the $21,671 purchase price. Doesn't that sound inviting? I'm running to the BMW dealer right now hoping they haven't sold the last one!

CW summed it up by claiming that big adventure touring isn't cheap, and they are glad for good warranties. They were wrong on both counts. They simply overpaid for bikes with horrible reliability history. If they throw they Tenere' in the mix, at real world pricing would have gotten one 4 grand less that the KTM and a whopping 7 grand cheaper than the BMW. I am 100% sure the motor wouldn't need a complete rebuild at 8000 miles, and I am sure wouldn't rack up 5 grand in repair and maintenance costs in 11K. The last thing I worried about with my Tenere' was the warranty. I guess the 'premium' bikes need those. All this happened in less than 12K and one year. Imagine long term. I did. That is why I OWN and Tenere' and the CW guys would too, since not one dime came out of their pockets for those bikes.

Be assured we have the least expensive, most reliable bike in the world. PERIOD. Aren't you guys looking smarter every day? I'd say yes. No argument at all!   ::012::

Roger, you and I both know that you could go on any bike specific web site.   And European manufacturers are always at the top of the list of owner complaints. The Triumph Explorer for one.  BMW also have a shocking record on machine problems and warranty work. Ducati also suffer from massive and catastrophic failures. And  I dont think that I need to remind you Rog, regarding our day out on the supposed "magic carpet ride" Aprilia Caponord a 12 thousand pound bike, that was just a heap of  :shit:. Although I dont think that they will be inundated with warranty claims on that one, due to the fact that I have 12 months on from our test, yet to see one on the road. In my experience, which is lots( I'm 67 ya know) the Japanese make far and away the best bikes, and I cant see me buying anything else.

+1000000000000..........

However, I'm not a fan of Yamaha (Except Rossi), and Kawasaki Versys, doesn't really float my boat, nothing wrong with the bike, but if I'm going down a adv style bike, I can't guarantee those roads some of you (you know who you are) took us down two years ago, wouldn't turn into a little offloading.....

Yes, I know its 13-16k worth of bike, but isn't that what the designers had in mind?  ;-)

longevity is a worry though, at 54k, the GTR has been great - not 100% perfect, but certainly 95% perfect.

Its easy to read the forums, but as you say, I wonder whether I can blag a long day / weekend test ride....

Thanks for everyone's input.

I had my doubts that the K16 could be-would be any better than the GTR despite the assurances I got from Winston, as usual he was right and I was way off the mark. I spoke to Chris before I bought mine and he looked at the one I was buying on line and I still recall his comments, "You've got a bargain there".
Mines the GT SE with all the toys on it, one owner and it came with a staggering 3750 miles on it. I paid £11200 for it. It was a no brainer!

That's a huge depreciation....

But getting back.... I'm doing lots and lots of research and reading of reviews.

The more I read about the Super Adventure, the more I'm hooked.  The reviews are coming up with absolute minor points - the seat not being completely comfortable, the screen not it the right place or being too high.....  But I think these comments have been said before about another bike...... :-)

So, it's all very tempting........  But I'll keep you all informed over the next few months....

Sorry if I bore you all,  but it's been a little while since I've been this excited about a potentially new bike.....

I have loved my bike since day one of owning it.  I've been out on it for the last three days in a row. I wash it every single time it has been used, I love it more each time I ride it.  And I'm not confused at all.  It is tucked up in the garage looking like a new pin, and I love it to bits.

I know of people who went offroad on the ktm big adventure ,not to happy said weight was an issue for this riding ,i have changed my bike for a 650 v strom miss the power a bit but the light weight feel easy handling and comfy riding position amply make up for that .I did my research last year regarding these types of machines Yam suzuki and kawasaki 650/1000 adventure bikes bullet proof but lack top end power, ktm have the top end but are by no means bullet proof also the newer bmw older bmw ad1150 great bike .An itch is an itch and will continue until scratched one way or  another .

I said I do research, I bought three magazines yesterday - Bike,  Ride and Motorcycle.....   How about this 3 out of 3 loved the bike.....

And having read those three reviews, it looks like it might be a bye bye fireblade.....  But that doesn't change the fact that I can't test ride one until April sometime.  :-(

Weight for me is not an issue...  I feel at home on heavier bikes because of being 16 stone...  :-(  I'm shaving 70 kilos of the weight of the GTR........  That's a more than a small Italian!   ;-)

As always, keep you informed as to which way I go, but it's very unlikely I'm going to sell the GTR... :-)

Neil,

Do you like V-Twin bikes? Looking at your selection of bikes, I think they are all IL4s and speaking personally, I have never managed to get the same level of enjoyment from the twins. I have had Ducatis and Aprilias, all track bikes mind rather than road bikes, and I never really gelled with the totally linear power delivery. I was forever banging them into the rev limiter, and they never felt fast to me due to that lack of IL4 top end rush.

When I did ride them on the road, I also got intensely frustrated at the vibration and jerky power delivery at low rpm town speeds.

I am having similar 'should I change, just because the GTR is getting on a bit' thoughts as you. I am wondering, mine now at 63k, how long it will continue to be reliable for. I really want to like the R1200RT as the weather protection, gadgets,  and comfort all fill my long commute needs. I just cannot get on with the engine though, just seems so agricultural to me.

The K1600 would probably be perfect, but it is a lot of money to spend on something that I am going to ruin by riding through the winters and avoiding the bucket & sponge.

I think the GTR is almost perfect. Yes, there might by 10% better out there in the latest stuff, but I keep coming back to how great the GTR is for crunching big miles. I hope I can keep mine past 100k.

Martin.
Title: Re: KTM Super Adventure
Post by: SirToU on March 10, 2015, 08:56:23 PM
Martin, you know what - you have hit the nail on the head...  but my defence to that is before I started Motogymkhana, I had a KTM 950 SM for a year and really liked the bike, but when it came to pushing it to its limits, I too would bounce it off the rev limiter, I could get the chassis to twist beneath me and take complete liberties and I would get really frustrated, but I rode it everyday for a year on to work, as I bought it as a commuter.

My issue with it was that, while doing Motogymkhana, there is a lot of slower speed manoeuvres and the trying it get a 950 V twin to run smoothly, I found exceptionally difficult at my limits back then.  I was also very conscience of my ability to push the bike close to its design limits on the country lanes - so I sold it in favour of the Z750R (inline4), which has won me 4 championships - good (lucky) decision.  however there was a sting in the tail, the day before I sold the SM, the throttle cable snapped and I've always wondered whether, thats the reason I was having difficulties with it.

The other additional factor (as I've mentioned previously) is, none of the current realm of proper adventure bikes, which, would be fair to say are twins (BMW, KTM, Ducati, Yamaha(?) ), appreciated Kawasaki and Suzuki have brought out the Versys and Vstrom, have got anywhere near the power of the GTR, and when you travelling 2 up with lots of kit, overtakes are not as prompt - AND thats where the Super Adventure comes in........  160BHP KTM v 155 BHP GTR and Torque Figures are also up - 100 ft lb GTR compared to 103 ft lb KTM in addition to being 75kg lighter (249kg wet KTM v 325kg (ish) Wet GTR, so power to weight ratio is also going to be up - 0.70bhp/tonne as opposed to 0.50 bhp/tonne on the 2010 GTR (2009 GTR is approximately 0.55bhp/tonne)  [AM I SELLING THIS YET?  ;-) ].

So as you can see, I'm really doing the research (am I boring you yet - might as well share the pain, other half is pissed of already).

Thats not mentioning the electronic gizmo's  Traction Control, Action Suspension, Heated Seats and Grips, ABS and Cornering ABS, Tyre pressure sensors, 300mile tank range, Hill start (not that I ever needed it), cornering lights (never needed them either), back torque engine module (let the bugger slide - back it in my boy), Adjustable riders seat, and the Touratech catalogue...  :-)   I must have sold it by now........

Anyway - I'm hooked and can't wait to get a test ride....and bye bye blade.

Neil

Neil, I compliment you on your thought and research process.  You have obviously got this KTM thing implanted in your brain, and it more than likely wont go away until you have actually bought one. Oh and boring? No just very entertaining. Neil,

At this end of the market (i.e. anything above the 700cc commuter tool type of bike), we buy them with our hearts, not our heads. Even you and I, putting in lots of miles on them and therefore should be focussing on the practical, know that what appeals is the shiny, the exciting, the new.

Don't fight it. Bikes are emotional purchases. If we wanted sensible and to compare specification lists on a spreadsheet, we would buy a car.

Get whatever causes the man vegetables to tingle at the prospect  :mfr_lol:

Now, if BMW would just throw the S1000RR engine in the R1200RT package, I would also be a happy man with tingling feelings ....

OK, so I did phone the KTM Guys yesterday and their Demonstrator is in..... but I'm not going to be able to get there until 3 weeks time.  :-(

However, today, I took the Suzuki DL1000 VStrom out for a spin as my dealer (Crooks Suzuki) is only 2 miles down the road.

Ok, so I accept its not the best comparison, but it is a V twin, only has 100bhp with 79 ft lb max of torque - the KTM starts at that.

Actually, for a budget adventure/dual sport bike - WOW.... it was great, lot of bike for the money - smooth, lots of low down power, V twin character reasonably comfortable - but bloody cold today.

In my opinion, for 80%-90% of riders looking for an adventure bike, I think it would be a good start.

for me however, I like my toys and gadgets, settings and looking for something a little bit more premium.

May regret trying the KTM 1290 when I do - because I will want one even more.

Will keep you all informed.

0.7bhp/tonne =

:listencarefully:

power to weight ratio = power / weight

therefore

160bhp bike weighing 249kgs would have a ..................

Power to weight ratio = power 160bhp / weight 0.249tonne

                                = 160 / 0.249

                                 = 643bhp/tonne  (sounds a whole lot more fun than 0.7bhp/tonne)   :smartass:   :mfr_lol:

Yes that does sound better.

So, yesterday I took the Vstrom out and it turned out to be a game changer.....

So after 110,000 miles, the good times have rolled.... 3 GTR's and today I've finally decided to part with my girl.

I couldn't ride the 1290 SA today but we had a sit and I fell in love with Motorcycling again.....  Have test ride booked for 3 weeks time.  unfortunately, KTM have sold all their current stock and I'm going to have to wait until June (but have paid a deposit).... but hey - after then, the GTR will be 5 years old having picked her up on the 26th May 2010.

Then I'll have rolled and be "Ready to race!"

I've done it... I've test ridden it and loved it....

Deal has been done on the GTR, got an ok price that I am happy with.

Selected all the bits I want for the KTM...... total comes to nearly 2k - due to the panniers...  :-(  £1350 later.

Do you really want me to talk about the bike....  I don't think so.

But its great, I must be getting old because on the way back, everything I loved about the GTR (and still like), seemed to turn into a negative.  But I felt at home on the KTM, much like I did with the GTR in the beginning.  7 years later I needed a change.

None ever said, I can't change my mind in a year or so's time.

Thanks to everyone, but I will stick around and give my 2p's worth every now and again.....  I think (actually) - I know I would miss you guys - know some of your since my first GTR in September 2008.  :-)

How about this for a crazy thought - Can I pick it up at the factory and ride it back for its first service?

I think you have made a great choice ,I am finding my 990 superduke a fantastic bike, and in another couple of years I could possibly go down the same route, if kawasaki could lose the weight off the  gtr then the bike would be perfect, the longer you keep a bike and then try something new ,it's then that you see the big differences ,ridden on its own the gtr is king ,it shows up its shortcomings when you ride with adventure bike riders, the 1290 ktm could have moved the posts once more ., :biker3:

Congrats.  Had Gen 3,Duke 690, and it was a blast.  Just ate tires way too fast.  Here is the KTM forum I used, linked to the 1290.  Was going to buy a Super Duke 990, but store Wouldn't make the deal I wanted.   Enjoy the scoot, and watch for Leo's,  especially if it has no sensation of speed like the 690... tp

Hi All

Just thought I would mention the research I did today at the Manchester Bike Show.  (Show was good as we hadn't been to a show for a while).

So today, we looked at most of the completion to the 1290SA including Kawasaki Versys, Suzuki DL1000, Yamaha Super Tenere, Honda Cross Tourer, Ducati Multistrada S and Triumph Explorer, As well as a load of others. But not the BMW as three wasn't a BMW dealer (but there was a load of BMW bikes).

What we then did on the way home was pop into the Rocket Centre to sit on the KTM as there wasn't 1 item that we saw referenced KTM.

Anyway, I've come home to do a spreadsheet on those bikes.  but the overall opinion is, the KTM 1290 SA is the right bike for us at the moment - for lots of different reasons.  I can't wait even more now.  this is definitely going to be a love affair....    :-)

Sorry to bring this up again.... but I have been quiet about it...  :-)

Today is a very sad day.....  after 55135 miles, exactly 5 years of ownership and countless adventures and hours in the saddle, she was dropped of at the KTM dealer after our final 75mile ride from Barrow to Blackburn......    :. (

No I haven't got the new one yet - but its coming  only 2-3 weeks left to wait.  will let you all know when it arrives.

Some would say you ride too fast, but I wouldn't, no, I wouldn't.

Was at my local KTM dealer Wednesday, and there were four great KTM's, among all the orange dirt bikes, on the floor, An Adventure, a Super Adventure, and a Super Duke and a new RC 390.  Guy said that was all he would be getting, and there would be NO discounting, period, even if I wanted one of them.  (I've bought 13 bikes from them over the years.)  Oh yeah, they rolled a new RC8R out while there, too.  KTM is running WFO, building the hottest bikes available.  And yes, I would like to have the 1290 Super Duke.  tp
