Title: Wear a helmet camera?
Post by: Kwikasfuki on October 13, 2014, 08:15:32 PM
Interesting story about the Go Pro being the cause of Schumacher's injuries:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/gopro-shares-getting-crushed-report-145653729.html

I know someone on the forum mentioned this was possible (sorry, can't recall who), and at the time I thought highly unlikely, but it looks like it can compromise the safety of the helmet

True, but given some of the speeds these skiers can do, I assume they are manufactured to a high tolerance?

Not something id like to, scared of heights

But he was off piste and hit a big rock, i would have thought with something like a camera on your lid would cause a neck injury or something due to it twisting your head ?  i don't know........

but very sad and glad to see he's making a recovery, albeit slow one......

Asif, I could be wrong but I believe it was Winston who mentioned that the wearing of a helmet cam could induce a twist of the neck/head and aggravate your injuries.

I do hope that the Schumacher's legal team aren't contemplating a claim against the CEO of Go Pro especially after the recent release of his wealth, 10 billion dollars!

There are clips on the web, but I don't think they are of the actual incident for some reason.....

Helmets aren't designed nor tested for 'additions' to the outside structure.  I don't see how it would affect the helmet if it was glued on but if the helmet had holes drilled into it I could see where it might cause weakness to the structure.

How are those helmet cams attached?

With high adhesive tabs.  They stick to virtually any surface like shit on a stick.

On my commute I'm seeing more riders with helmet cameras presumably to film incidents to help with insurance claims.
Thats on the presumption that they dont find riding at 30mph throuigh traffic in the rain inteesting and worthy of putting on Youtube

I wear a camera skiiing but not on the bike.

I recall that amongst other things that motorcycle helmets are designed to slide in incidents and not grip and that a camera or the mount would provide that grip point that could cause neck injuries in the wrong circumstances

Ski helmets are really expensive cycle helmets providing a small amount of protection but nothing like a full face gold standard or sharp 5 rating would

Its a balance of lightweight and some protection and loads of weight and lots
