Title: Damaged fairing....
Post by: gwocni on September 21, 2014, 06:00:16 PM
Hi Guys,
Just arrived home after a great run out on the NW coast to discover a bl@@dy big crack in the fairing on the lower RHS leading edge. Seems like a stone of some sort did this but I can't remember being hit that hard. Can this be repaired easily or should I buy a new bit and if so do they come painted?

New panels do come painted, however I don't see that a repair would be difficult for any competent bodyworker/painter. I've had lots of panels painted on my classic bikes and every time the finish (even on candy coat) has been just about perfect.

It probably comes down to which is the cheaper/more convenient option, as a body shop would probably want the (removed) panel for a few days, whereas a new fairing section would screw straight on.

If you want to have it repaired and are near to Cambridge, I would be happy to give you the contact details for the painter that I use.

There are methods of plastic welding you can use but if you replace the panel, be aware that when you order it absolutely nothing comes with it but the panel.  All the bits fastened/glued whatever, do not, such as decals, etc.

Thanks for that, I have an excellent painter but I just thought that with the pink and green speckle (yes really) it would be a bugger to match. I'm in NI BTW.

In order to match the paint, the painter that I use holds a device like a camera with a large rubber dome on the end over a section of good paintwork and takes a "picture". This camera - like device has several cables attached to it linked to a computer in the nearby office and from the "photograph," it produces a list of constituents that make up the colour.

So far, at least for my work, every match has been totally successful!
