Title: Snatchy throttle and Secondary Butterflys
Post by: No73 on September 03, 2014, 12:45:49 PM
Hi all

Just a thought about my snatchy throttle I am beginning to wonder if its stood a few days if the butterfly valves are starting to seize so when I ride it next its awful for a while then gets better, when I say seize  I mean they are slow then open quickly, is this possible?

Cables adjusted properly and lubed?

Yes all cables are fine and had a squirt of silicone, first thing I checked

fuel managment tuner will solve this issue.

Hey Guys,

Had my GTR1400 about 2 months. The first thing I noticed was the snatchy throttle and put it down to the shaft drive 1400 lump versus my previous revvy Gixxer Thou K2 chainer.

Only when I had a pillion on board did I notice that it was almost impossible to carry out smooth gear changes and soft starts.

I recently found a post about setting the TPS. (Throttle position sensor) I know this isn't an old wives tale as I've head to do the same basic procedure on previous BMW's and also some injection cars.

As per a lot of the posts the procedure is;

Switch ignition ON (make sure red kill switch is also ON) but don't start the engine.
Now slowly and smoothly twist the throttle from its fully closed position to fully open then smoothly back to closed. Repeat the procedure a few times making sure you stop at fully closed and sully open for a few seconds at each end.
When completed, switch the ignition off to store the new TPS calibration.

The bikes computer expects to see the throttle butterflies  fully closed when the TPS sensor outputs the fully closed signal, likewise fully open signal at the fully open position. The reason is the TPS has a linear signal output in between the two locations.

The problem comes over time when wear allows the throttles open / close positions to change but the TPS still expects to see the previous positions. This causes the TPS to output a reading the bikes computer doesn't expect to see adversely affecting the fuelling.

Anyway (I've waffled!) I carried out the procedure this morning after dropping the boy to school and it fixed the snatchy throttle problem by roughly 80%. I put the other 20% of snatch down to drive shaft take-up. (I've never referred to snatch in a negative way before!?)

Try it; you've got nothing to lose and it take 3 minutes with no tools required.

I often use these sites and get frustrated that very few people ever give a conclusion. Well, I have and it certainly helps at the very least!

The next stage is; I've see a YouTube video of a guy stripping the tetra drive to Greece the crown wheel and pinion at the gearbox output drive to get rid of "drive shaft knock"!?!? I don't have drive shaft knock but my logic tells me that a lack of Grease may add to that horrid take-up snatch.

I hope this helps someone as everyone's posts have helped me in the past?

Hi, I got rid of 90% of the throttle snatch after I changed the air filter for a reusable one. Don't know if it was coincidence, if i disturbed something while I was doing it, or if it assisted with the fuel mixture settings.

Hey Guys,

I just noticed some of the typos.... That's the result of writing a post using a phone (while sat on the can!)  :mfr_lol:

Just stick it in Eco mode. This makes the on/off throttle fuel injection at low revs much nicer and has negligible impact on normal road riding. For me the standard setting should be Eco mode with a switch to turn on the harsher delivery (GLF) mode.

I find the opposite applies to be honest.  If I use mine in eco around town then the bike lurches and surges, but is nice and smooth on the motorway. I use normal mode in town and when on the twisties, and put it in eco mode on the motorway to conserve fuel. Strange how each bike has a slightly different character.

mine run's a lot smoother in the eco mode,i only use the hooligan mode if & when i need it.otherwise i run in eco.
