Title: Welcome to prison.
Post by: Lonewolf on August 05, 2014, 08:05:20 PM
Of all the stupid things to do, no sympathy at all I'm afraid.

So what was the purpose of the RAF jet "escorting" the plane into MIA ?.

So what was the purpose of the RAF jet "escorting" the plane into MIA ?.

it had a weapons system on board so ultimately it would shoot the Plane down IF the plane became a larger threat to the public. moreover , Its standard protocol for " terrorist" situations and serves as a confidence booster for the passengers, and the airport staff and the service staff who have to deal with the plane once its down.

You honestly think someone in Whitehall would have the balls to call in an air to air strike to kill a few hundred passengers on board?  Over a major city?

Not in a hundred years

Post 9/11 it would be better to have a commercial airliner in a million pieces in open land than in a city centre.

Malaysian Airlines in open farmland or United Airlines in Lower Manhattan ?

Have to say, I hope the RAF have some good counselling in place for the pilot who does have to press the button.

As has been said Geoff, quite simply, if the situation dictated, shoot it down.

What over Manchester?.  Why was the plane not diverted to a military airfield, instead of  allowing it to continue to the second? biggest airport in Britain?, which is located very close to one of the most densely populated areas in the country.

Furthermore, I cannot believe that there could be any situation in this country that would justify the shooting down of a passenger aircraft with 300 people onboard.

Let me say at the outset - I don't want it but personally I believe it is only a matter of time before we have our own 9/11 or Mumbai style terrorist attack on a major UK hotel complex.

Someone in authority will have the unenviable job of calling for the button to be pressed - rather them than me but it may have to be done.

I assume Manchester is the designayed airport for the north of England.
Just about any problem  / suspect plane in the south of England is diverted to Stansted, where they have remote aircraft stands and the local police etc have SOP's for this type of thing.
Manchester does suprise me if it is, there are surely more remote airports that could be used.
There are not lot of military airbases left with adequate size runways and taxiways for very large commercial a/c.

Indeed, 7/7 could potentially have been a lot worse/larger.

The authorities are obviously in a position where they are 'damned if they do and damned if they don't''

I have to agree with mr wolf , consider the damage a 777 /or even a380 would do if crashed into old trafford on derby day

the typhoon definitely had weapons on board , if there was no intention it would fly without them? If the plane was hijacked and the intended target/ possible casualties was a bigger loss than the aircraft and passengers I believe it would be shot down. this protocol serves as a deterent against hijacking , so hopefully will never be deployed.
I think as long as the aircrew are in control everything is ok , but once the cockpit has been breached , its just a matter of time and an appropriate area before it is shot down .
imagine if the plane was flying towards canary wharf or buckingham palace or houses of parliament , do you think they would just sit back and watch it happen. It would never be the pilots call , the whole scenario is being managed by military command , pilots just obeys orders.

as for shooting a plane down over Manchester, those of you that have flown this route will know how much farmland the planes approach over , it comes in over saddleworth moors, and the last 15 minutes its over the farms near Knutsford ect.

John nice to hear from you. Hope all is well or at least improving for you and you're making a good recovery.

I sincerely hope that we in the UK never have to deploy such tactics.

Yes indeed, but inbetween Saddleworth moor and Knutsford lies Oldham, Stockport and Manchester. It will be a very sad day for mankind, if our own government order a passenger aircraft with 300 innocent people on board to be shot down. I dont see it happening regardless of the circumstances.

Plan A. BMW K1600 GT SE

Plan B. BMW GS1200

Plan C. New 1400 GTR

Something like that, but I'm going to keep my eyes open and see what takes my fancy. All I can say though is that I'll be extremely disappointed if I don't own a K1600 pretty damn soon.
