Title: The key pass
Post by: tyretothewire on May 04, 2011, 07:20:56 PM
Hi 1400 GTR Owners

I recently experienced something on my GTR1400 that has never happened before or since. On atrip to Scotland from Leicestershire I stopped to admire the view and take some photos at Glencoe. To my annoyance when I pressed the button to turn the key the familiar klick was absent. Tried it several times without any joy. I also tried the emergency one which you get with the 2011 edition but still no joy.
Has anybody experienced this at all.
I certainly haven't and this is the second GTR I've had due to the fact that some careless cardriver wrote the first one off after a year and 22000miles later. Luckily I had not locked the handlebar when I stopped as I'm in the habit of doing and being on the top of a very long hill I rolled it down trying to start it as I went along. It was only when I ran out of hill another couple of attempts that it started again.
Any Ideas anybody?

Welcome to the forums tyretothewire.

You appear to have a stuck Kipass issue. It's rare but does happen. At approx the 9 o'clock position, tapping the housing should free the solenoid.

Hummmm ?? Anyway, welcome to the forum Tyre man ... I have NO idea what would cause that but as we know the GTR is full of electronic gadgetry so I would think a trip to the dealer to check it out would be worth your time and money... I wouldn't want to be stuck anywhere north of London with a bike that doesn't work !  ;D ;D
NB .. how do you know all this stuff ??? You amaze me !

I had it too - went totally on mine and was replaced under warranty.

Thanks Norman Bates. I knew there had to be an explanation my fellow bikers on the trip kept teazing me telling me the granite round me was my kryptonite.

I know it's a PITA when it happens to you but I do find it kinda funny that after all the plethora of objections people raised against KiPass the only part that has failed anywhere world-wide is the switch that activates it. It's even a mechanical failure of the switch. <LOL>
??? ;D ::) ::)

I may be in a minority but I actually like the Kipass I have a similar system on the car so I was used to just walking up and driving of at the push of a button.

It would be nice if the petrol cap access was easier and the panniers where also linked in but maybe that'll be the MKII. I had a spare key made which I keep with my house key to avoid the hassle at petrol stations

I've heard that the presence of certain outside electric influences can affect the Kipass and prevent it from working but touch wood, so far I personally have never experienced it.

I have had two instances where car wouldnt start and called out the aa both times cause was put down to either WiFi related interference from Tesco and another when parked under a mobile phone base station
The aa man had seen it on several occasions.

My PMA radio sits on the Kipass under the seat and neither effect one another.

The car is 59 reg and never had a problem with it not starting (touch wood) but did have a problem with the key fob setting off the alarm's at Sainsburys and Boots which lead to a couple of arkward moments but think the alarms have had some update done to resolve the problem as its not happened for sometime

F**k me Winston...looks like you got a Bomb strapped under your seat...Are you an International Terrorist by any chance..

On to the Topic...mine can be pain in Ass some times. But found holding the Key fob closer to Ignition seems to sort it, might be pure flook , but has worked.

My Key fob went for a spin the other day , preceded by an hour on a 60 degree cycle & all within the confines of a pocket on my shorts...Wondered where it was , then when hanging out washing it fell to floor. It would not work at first , but new Battery & it's fine.

I guess shorts are not the best place to keep the fob  ::) ;D.
I keep mine in the sleeve pocket of my favourite biking jacket, so I don't have to search for the blasted thing when I want to go out. For the petrol cap I don't think it's to much hassle to just take the key out of the ignition and for the panniers I just use the little key in the fob.

I never remove the key from the ignition but I did take someone's advice and get a small spare key made up which is handy when you want access to the panniers and fuel tank. The fob with key inserted remains zipped up in an internal jacket pocket. It's with me on every ride but I never need to even touch it.

Steve, what is the blank key number?  My local 'smith couldn't match a blank to the K-key

The frst place I went to couldn't match it either then I went to a cobblers and they had stacks of blank Kawasaki keys, the reference is KAW 6DP or it could be KAW 8DP. I've sent you a picture of it via MMS see if you can make out whether its a 6 or an 8. I'd say a 6.

Take your point fellow Bikers about keeping Key in Jacket..Just I keep my Jacket & all rest Bike clothing in Garage. I go down stairs in shorts & Sandals & change in Garage. Hence key fob coming back up stairs in shorts.
I to had problem trying to get some one to cut spare for fuel & luggage.

£5 is all I was charged so it's a sensible thing to do because I'm forever losing keys, wouldn't want to lose an expensive fob.

My bike actually came with 3 keys. 1 in the ignition, 1 in the fob and the third one in a black plasic case and this supposedly can unlock the bike if you loose the fob.

Unlock it maybe, start it NO

Well, I haven't tried it out yet, but the manual says, if you lose the fob you have to hold the plastic case in a right angle to the ignition and you should be able to start the bike. I'll try it out and let you know if it works or not.

OK - I just gave the spare fob a try and I managed to start the bike without the fob being anywhere near.
So at least on the 2011 model you can start and ride the bike if you loose the fob as long as you have the spare fob.

You are not alone, did the same thing last week :D it was quite a relief when it worked ok after a new battery!
