after owning my gtr for over a year I still am uncomfortable with a few things
the weight- its a beast and gawd knows how I haven't dropped it yet. doing u turns is almost panic attack inducing and as im on tip toes stopping on an incline is the same. im no midget im 5' 10"
Saturday 2 up fully laden I had to reverse as a coach was stuck ahead and the car in front nearly rammed me I was reversing so slow - I hate the weight factor and im almost on the verge of selling it
also setting off twice on a warm engine in two days it just cut out and died for no reason and if I had been leant over turning right etc I would certainly have dropped it
anyone else witnessed this cutting out?
getting on board 2 up
any tips so as not to scratch the panniers or tank?
my wife has been getting on first, side saddle then going akimbo boot precariously close to the tank
then I have to feed my leg over in between her and the tank
getting off she has to hold my boot up to stop it scratching panniers
any tips?
I like the bike once its over about 70mph but it just scares me at very slow speeds
My 2012 GTR has cut out a few times, always when changing gear, engine partially hot and usually between third and fourth or fourth and fifth. It just dies, the oil pressure light comes on briefly and then as the new gear goes in it restarts immediately. Probably won't then happen again for another 1,000 miles or so.
I've mentioned it to the dealer a few times now, however in fairness to them it is just too isolated an event to demostrate.
In addition once, after a lay - up of around three weeks it ran at very low rpm after starting and cut dead as I pulled away from the first junction some 2 - 3 minutes later, when it did seem to have settled down to me after the strange start.
I would have to say overall though that it is MUCH easier to ride than my BMW K1200 RS at low speeds - that was a bike that simply wanted to fall over at less than about 10 mph!
mine only does it while setting off and on tiny amounts of throttle so as not to spin wheels on gravelly surfaces etc
never inbetween gears though
its prob only happened 4 or 5 times in the year ive owned it (but twice in the last 2 days)
and im gonna try to recreate it to see exactly when it happens
On the cutting out issue, increase the tickover to 1200rpm. Fixed it for me and several others.
Had it cut out once or twice ,I thought it was me as it was on a cold engine and not anuff revs, you get on the bike first she when told steps on one peg and grabs your shoulder and swings leg over , put some protective film on the panniers ,they are only panniers ,keep away from tank , scratch on tank a no no , panniers will get marked what ever you do , had a swap go on a gs I thought it felt like a 250 so light and flick able,
ta for that!! I bought a full set of that protective film last year but too scared to fit it
I "raced" a pal on his gs on a very twisty rd and it was quite hard for me to overtake him below 120
I've had my bike since Aug of 2007 and only have dropped it once and that was because I forgot to put the kickstand down in the garage. Thankfully I broke it's fall with my body so it received only minor blemishes. As far as being heavy, I had a C10. It was heavy as well. Also had a Voyager that was heavy but the center of gravity for it was much lower. Both me and the missus was out this weekend in the Shenandoah Valley so I can attest to how she gets on....the missus, not the bike, although what really can be said about this marvelous machine... My technique is to sit on the bike whilst the side stand is down holding both brakes. She grabs me arm and mounts the beast like it was a horse. No problems there. She dismounts first. I've scuffed the right side bag much more than she has. I do have the plastic protective sheets on the cases. They are the only ones I attempted myself. They do work but some say it's harder to get the scuff marks off the sheets than the actual paint. I tried one of those magic erasers and got all the scuffs off the plastic with very little work. Boomer is correct in upping the idle once it's warmed up to 1200 or so. Oh, I just remembered as we're getting on in years, I do help her getting her right leg back over the saddle and she grabs my left arm for steadying purposes. That technique seems to work for us...
The weight was the reason i changed to a Z1000SX touring, it is 12 STONE !!! lighter than the GTR, i too dropped my GTRs several times ( i too am 5'10''). I never had a cut out, and i get on the bike first then Angie just stands on the left peg and swings her leg arround. She has caught the panniers many times though but the marks rub out easily enough.
If you do find the weight an issue over time then i would highly recommend the SX, its no GTR, but has lots of plus points.

:agree: "other bikes are available"
ta for answers and tips!!
the way we do it there is no chance of any scratches as long as we hold each others boots
but its a little unlady like when she changes from side saddle to legs akimbo with me holding her boot off the tank so we will try the other ways
ive been paranoid about scratching the panniers but the missus doesn't seem to care.....
sometimes that poor little side stand looks a tad flimsy as we get on and off
and also if I park on an incline the bike almost seems too eager to topple over, not that it has, but a gust of wind could do it
we stole a rock off a wall top to put under the side stand to sort it over weekend
I should carry my spare 12mm ally plate with me
