Title: Out & about at Tan Hill.
Post by: Lonewolf on August 19, 2010, 11:02:18 PM
As the title says, the weather wasn't too bad today, the bike was fuelled up & I had a few hours to spare so off I went for a little jaunt around The Yorkshire Dales, Swaledale and Tan Hill Inn to be precise. Its a bit like a pilgrimage is the Tan Hill Inn, I seem drawn to it everynow and again and especially whenever I have a different bike. Its like I have to show it where the Inn is.

From home, (Bradford) I set off on the M62, M1, A1M and upto Scotch Corner. All uneventful stuff. Then I took the A66 westbound towards Dalton and turned off down some narrow lane towards Reeth. Once in Reeth its a pretty straight forward route through to Swaledale but some decent roads and very quiet. On the final run up to the Inn you have to watch out for sheep, suicidal sheep to be exact, running out in front of you but with a bit of practice you can sometimes predict what they are thinking. I wouldn't want to hit one though. It wouldn't be pretty for them or the bike!!
On route I took a few pics just to tempt anyone who perhaps hasn't been up there before. Its the highest pub in the UK. When the weather is kind its a nice ride, but if you go un-prepared you will regret it.

A couple of scenic shots.

Not quite sure what this is doing at the road side unless it's for the sheep to shelter in in winter.

The famous Tan Hill Inn and its mode of transport come snowfall. Some customers were trapped up there for three days last year during the heavy snow

and if you ever get up there you will see why ;D

Have to confess, I've never done that route. Some good photos there. I see you went for the best colour bike :). Oh, the scenery isn't bad either!

One of my favourite routes that way is the A65 (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Huddersfield,+West+Yorkshire+HD2+2TP,+UK&sll=53.565395,-1.951275&sspn=0.084721,0.145912&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Huddersfield,+West+Yorkshire+HD2+2TP,+United+Kingdom&ll=53.958106,-2.1492&spn=0.150694,0.583649&t=h&z=11&layer=c&cbll=54.023219,-2.263822&panoid=mfiWJXAtGNmQvEqkeD9NEQ&cbp=11,183.39,,0,10.93)

I normally do the A57 Snakes Pass (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=snakes+pass+inn&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=21.560716,37.353516&ie=UTF8&hq=snakes+pass+inn&hnear=&ll=53.385018,-1.732235&spn=0.019095,0.072956&t=h&z=14&layer=c&cbll=53.37986,-1.740372&panoid=yh2jmjz18u8Mqyb2HVFx5A&cbp=11,144.64,,0,-3.47).

Or the A635 (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=snakes+pass+inn&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=21.560716,37.353516&ie=UTF8&hq=snakes+pass+inn&hnear=&t=h&layer=c&cbll=53.535266,-1.975748&panoid=3fqMfO9UF2LxlL8Xm3G1yg&cbp=11,188.54,,0,-0.32&ll=53.535309,-1.975822&spn=0.038055,0.145912&z=13)

And the A628 (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=snakes+pass+inn&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=21.560716,37.353516&ie=UTF8&hq=snakes+pass+inn&hnear=&t=h&layer=c&cbll=53.495546,-1.869683&panoid=pPW3M0AIHM1ZdUpncMKQvQ&cbp=11,124.09,,0,-3.36&ll=53.484266,-1.904068&spn=0.0381,0.145912&z=13). Actually, I think I've pretty much done most routes in the Pennines.

I came back via Kirby Steven and on to Kendal (A65) and then through Kirby Lonsdale & Skipton before landing back in Bradford. Two hundred and a bit miles on a tank of fuel and it still hasnt got to the last fuel bar, I told you I was a sedate rider. 57.6 mpg so it says.  ;D
