Title: Hein Gericke heated grips
Post by: Kwikasfuki on May 01, 2011, 11:05:26 AM
Sorry, no pics of the install, but these are easy to put on.

The grips come pre-wired. Grab a pen and paper and draw out the connections.

Remove the bar ends. These are on with red locking agent so be careful not to round off the hex bolt as it will require force. On mine, they came off easily as it appears the previous owner didn't put any locking agent on when replacing the grips. Out of curiosity, anyone know why its red locking agent? I'd have though blue would suffice.

Grip removal was easy. A small screwdriver between the bar and grip did the trick. Then its a case of getting the old glue off. Grabbed some nail polish remover, soaked a cloth with it, held it against the bar for a minute, and then scrubbed it off.

Put the heat controller on the left reservoir, cable tied down, and ran the power wires to my fuzeblock. Alternative is to wire to front left hand accessory leads. Then it was a case of following the wiring diagram made earlier.

The packaging didn't come with any glue, so again, grabbed the missus hairspray, sprayed onto the bars, and slid the grips right on. One on, let them settle of a minute before cutting the end of them off with a knife (so the bar weights won't stop the throttle from turning). Hairspray works beautifully btw.

And voila. New set of grips that took about one hour to install and that only because I had to remove the old ones and have both sides of my fairing off (left to remove the old ones as they were wired to accessory leads, and right to wire new ones to Fuzeblock)

I've got the same hot grips as you have but I know mine aren't wired into the front accessory connectors so I guess the previous owner had them spliced into some other electrical point. Wouldnt surprise me if the dealer didnt even know there were connector blocks at the front which would have made the job mega simple.  ::)

Is it possible to get to the front connectors without removing the left fairings?

Yes, all you need to do is remove the left infil panel in the top of the left fairing. This will give you the access you need.

For future reference though, even if you did need to remove the fairing it is a remarkably simple job. I am the most incompetent person when it comes to anything mecahanical and yet even I managed it. The cables you need are in the rubber boot.

I should add that the HG grips I purchased are the old design i.e. the ones that have "off-start-on" listed on the controller. The new ones are based of the Oxford heated grips and on my last bike they got lukewarm. The old ones get HOT

I only needed to take all the fairing off when I serviced the bike recently and changed the coolant and air filter and even that was easy.

Looks daunting but it isnt.
