Well I think its very sad that a bike launched so recently with such a guffaw should now be unrideable.
TBH BMW wont ever get any more of my money after my last experience(s) with them

Is that what killed Kevin Ash ?

It's nothing new, their recall and reliability record is nothing short of shocking. There will some poor soles away in foreign parts on these bikes, and wont know anything is amiss until/if they get home. A new bike on the market for a matter of months with an urgent recall such as this is just unexeptable.
how can a company have such a poor record with their bikes but not with their cars , their unreliability in the bike world is legendary, people don't say that their cars!
A friend of mine is a tour leader for BMW.
I'm sure he won't mind me posting this extract from him re what has happened in respect of this issue
Motorrad Tours already been in touch and 2 spare bikes being trailered from the UK overnight to be with me at 04:00 tomorrow so the customer gets up at 07:00 and has a new bike ready to complete the tour. I'm sorting it all out through the night
Wonder if any other manufacturers would do/be able to do this?

Good point Chris, however apart from the 'odd' Italian manufacturer most other (Japanese) manufacturers wouldn't need to do that :mfr_lol:

Yes that's great BUT other manufacturers dont need to go to such lengths, due to the fact that they develop their bikes properly, and dont leave that job to the customer.
To be fair to the manufacturer, they cannot win this argument. If they become aware of a safety concern that merits a recall and don't take prompt action, they would be subject to serious criticism (and rightly so) yet when they do take action, they are similarly seen in a poor light.
It is, however a serious problem if you are away on tour, as presumably in this situation if you ride on and ignore the problem hoping to make it home, insurance could perhaps be invalidated on the grounds that the bike is deemed unroadworthy?
I enjoyed five years of BMW ownership, my only reasons for not buying another were: No four cylinder tourer available (I found the six too heavy and could not live with the throttle/clutch/driveline snatch) and dealer labour rates that make any out - of - warranty repairs a major event. I also do not like the total reliance on canbus electrics that BMW seem to go with.
BMWs are generally pretty reliable.
Their build quality isn't what it was in the late 70s and the 1980s but it's still pretty high.
It is certainly higher than Kawasaki's and usually higher than Honda's.
I would have no problem owning a BMW if they made anything that I fancied that didn't cost a :censored: mortgage to buy.
I've refrained from commenting until now.....Chris if I owned that particular model of BMW and whether or not I was away from home I'd be a tad miffed if I was told by BMW I could no longer ride my bike but I'd be pleasantly pleased and reassured that the issue had been identified by BMW promptly and the notification sent out to me and other owners to prevent me coming to any harm. (So that would be a top marks for BMW from me).
If however I was overseas on tour and this problem came to light and BMW went to the trouble of sending out replacement bikes to me overnight I'd be bloody impressed as hell and chuffed to bits and would forever be singing their praises.
These things happen, nothing's infallible and as long as you get the support which BMW are offering, that to me seems like a win, win situation.
I wonder if Kawasaki would do the same.

Geoff do you remember when Kawasaki recalled their early GTR's because the panniers kept falling off because they'd used the wrong latches, oh and then there's the shock adjuster, and the discs, and the inadequate top box plate......
And I just got reminded about the rear brake thing via REGISTERED MAIL this time to my address in France..... Better get it done !
Don't forget the rear brake..
Rear brake thingy? Just bought a 2011 GTR, has there been an issue?
Must admit I was sorely tempted by the new R1200RT, but the price was...well...pricey!

There was a safety recall/mod on the rear brake pedal mechanism to prevent pebbles becoming lodged and the rear brake becoming locked on. It takes about 15 minutes approx and is done FOC by a Kwak dealer. I would either ask a local Kwak dealer to contact Kawasaki UK on your behalf or contact Kawasaki direct.
Old fitment....

Yep, recalled twice. The first one didn't take.

not looking good,my mate had his r1200rtle picked up this morning,he's asked when it's going to be repaired & when it's likely to be sorted, the dealer cant answer the question,he even asked if they had a replacement,no joy there either.rather him than me,he's going to seek advice.
Recalls are more commonplace these days than they used to be, maybe its because we now live in a more litigious society and therefore manufacturers dare not take any risks, and that includes cars ...remember Toyaotas woes only a couple of years ago
I have no axe to grind with BMW Motorcycles, however I did experience more problems with the two that I owned (one of which was brand new) than I ever have with any of the Kawasaki's that I have owned previously over many many years.
I do believe that the attention to detail that BMW used to lavish on their machines in years gone by has fallen by the wayside as a result of the huge demands now placed upon them to manufacture far greater numbers of machines, to meet demand.
Check this site out and draw your own conclusions

I don't know what the obsession is with having a dig at BMW, I've absolutely no doubt that if you had the stats to hand from other bike manufacturers including our beloved Kawasaki's they'd be similar issues, some of which may be common knowledge and others that perhaps may not be so well known.

Agreed.....and that is precisely why I put the the link in my above posting Steve, you can check all manufacturers recalls there
:censored:
Apparently there has been no recorded incidents of this failure / problem with bikes sold.
Its the manufacturer of the part that have brought it to BMW s attention and quite rightly, BMW have acted swiftly.
You can't be fairer than that..........

Schadenfreude ?
I'm not having a go at BM, I have no axe to grind with the marque but a mate of mine had a GS for a year or so purchased nearly new, in that short time the bike had new bearings fitted in the shaft at the rear wheel (dealer told him because BMW decided to save cash and do away with the sight glass) a new fuel pump, after that he decided on advice from the GS forum to carry a spare one at all times, he learned from other owners and his own realisation that BMW don't do R&D very well on bikes, they are quite happy to let the customer do that and if the bike fails then BMW will pay for it to be fixed hence re-enforcing there so called customer service reputation.
He sold the bike after less than a year of ownership and bought a Yamaha Tenere, had it two years, it hasn't missed a beat or been off the road due to problems and he reckons apart from the kudos of owning a BM the Tenerlady is a much better bike.
Just one man's opinion.
