If you didn't watch it then you can see it On Demand.. It's a must
I watched it too... Very brave lads.
nice one debs, we are off to visit the dams in a few weeks. The dambusters raid sure was a famous one , however I never realised how many other daring raids were executed that didn't hit the headlines or were indeed classified for 50 years !

617 did many jobs not mentioned in that interesting documentary...................
Lenard Cheshire started his homes as a direct result of his war service

Thanks for that Debs - very good documentary. Incredible bravery the likes of which I can't imagine the general public of today at age 20 odd would have if called up for service...

Don't put down the youth of today. If their family and country was under threat they would step up, as would most people. Our culture is different these days but people will always fight to protect what is theirs.

Falkland Islands, Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan?
My comment probably came out wrong... I'm sorry if I caused offence. And Boomer is right.
I just can't imagine that these days you will see this kind of bravery if the same circumstances arose.
In any case, a world war now would be totally different and probably wouldn't call for the same TYPE of bravery. Shots will be fired remotely, and the bravery would come from those on the ground among the immediate victims, I should imagine.
Anyway, I'll shut up now :help:

Falkland Islands are British and deserve to be fought for and kept. Bosnia is anyone's guess. Iraq is the US's (oil you know, otherwise we wouldn't give a :censored:, and the Russians can have Afghanistan. We should have given it back 9 years ago.
Its all very well remembering and watching what they all did,,,,, a different matter appreciating it......Great Britain is no longer Great,
....the only winners in todays society are the ones who sponge off the state and winge " i can't get a job " " I don't want to do that job " " my back hurts, I have a stick, give me disability benefit "
....and they are the ones who should appreciate what was done,,,,,,,
Why am I bitter ?...... My father was on the front line almost 3 years and the stories I heard were quite shocking and heart wrenching, especially Dunkirk beach :surrender:. Difficult to really appreciate when told to you at the age of 15....
But it was classed as 'WORK', your daily job was to be shot at.... :gun_bandana:
thats why those people who can say they appreciate the sacrifice are very seldom out of 'WORK'...
...those that sponge off the state all their life can :censored: off, i just don't have time for them..
...... :rip: everyone who fought for this country......we are trying to make your sacrifice worth while ..........but we are struggling to move on and capitalise on your victory,,,,, 70 years later !
Well said Ant.....and I reckon the return of conscription would be a very worthwhile action in this day and age.
+2 Ant and OC. My dad fought the Japanese in the Philippines and mom was bombed (Ipswich) by the Germans in WWII.
:agree: Ant
Granddad was a Desert Rat specializing in sticky bombs
He spent most of his time after volunteering in 1939 with the 8th Army in North Africa :tank:
Before I come to The Belfry on friday, I will visit some friends in St Mawes. Mike, a 70 year young former SAS is currently on his way home from Normandy with a regiment budy. They went over there (on a RIB! Two 70 years old lads over the channel from Cornwall. on a RIB...) to pay tribute to their regiment and all the other that sacrified their lives for the rest of us. One object was to locate the very spot where Pete's (Mikes buddy) father was killed in a Sherman tank, destroyed by a German Panther.
What those young lads did, going out knowing that the odds was clearly against them and that the chance of being wounded or killed was imminent is bravery in its true meaning.
Lets hope that we have learned something from the two world wars. There will allways be conflicts (it's in mans nature) but lets hope that they stay "small" and reasonable controlled.
A tribute to all who fought and died during WW1 and WW2.
Nice sentiment on remembering wars past and learning from it....unfortunately doesn't work in practice. There will always be some :censored: :censored: that wants to kill innocents or just has a lust for power. It will always be that way. This is why we still have atomics and are all the time developing new ways to kill each other. It's sad, but true.
I read the book many years ago, here's a radio play version https://archive.org/details/TheDambusters1954OtrAustralianRadio (https://archive.org/details/TheDambusters1954OtrAustralianRadio)
Not sure how effective it was dropping "Tallboys" on the Tirpitz :-)

Isn't this ironic....in an antique store this afternoon and came across "Claims to Fame the Lancaster" by Norman Franks. Can't wait to read it.

I try and avoid antique stores, they might try and sell me :-)

Favourite irony from the US? A line in Third Rock From the Sun, when the aliens are sitting an exam to try to get their driving licences. One says: "If it is this difficult to get a driving licence here, imagine how difficult it must be to get a gun licence."
