Title: SJ4000 action camera
Post by: Kwikasfuki on April 15, 2014, 09:38:39 PM
If anyone is looking for a good quality action camera but doesn't want to spend the ridiculous money associated with a GoPro I can recommend the SJ4000. Looks like a GoPro, has excellent image quality, comes with lots of mounting options but only costs £75. Only downside is the battery life which is about 90 minutes at 1080p. On the plus side, an extra battery is only £5. It also is compatibale with GoPro mounts and can be used as in in car camera. For £75 its well worth it.

Available from Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00HHRFHG6/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B00HHRFHG6&linkCode=as2&tag=gtr1400couk-21)

You can read/watch an excellent review at Techmoan

Interesting! You probably wouldn't mind drilling a hole into the side of the case of a 75quid camera to power it... You shot any footage with it?

I have but need to reshoot. I angled the camera lens too far down so all you see is the windshield and my speedo

I thought it was a Go Pro when I first saw it. I wonder how long it will be before the manufacturers are taken to Court by Go Pro for copying the product.
If the lens quality is anything like the quality of the Go Po it'll be a winner at that price.

Thats not the only camera that looks like the GoPro and the functionality isn't as high spec as the GoPro. It also comes in a variety of colours and has a colour viewfinder built in.

Its a bit like apple suing samsung about the shape of the phone - pointless.

They have the older version which is the SJ1000 which was slightly more curved and had a waterfproof case
The SJ2000 is a bullet type camera

When you have worked out how to power it from the bike, mounted it on the left hand side handlebar and got it working as it should let me know and what you did, better still put together a complete package and sell it to me.

Looks better as a bike mounted device as helmet mounted it looks like you've got a Gatso stuck on your head :-) Attaching a power cable appears to put it in dash cam mode with date and time stamp and it starts and stops recording with external power on / off. V wide angle so gives fish eye view which can be novel but you'd soon get fed up with it...

Im trying to research this now as Im sick of making do with DIY powered cameras so I can run power from the bike to the camera, someone above mentioned that powering the camera puts it in to dashboard mode, does that mean just turning on and off with the bike power or does it as well over write its recorded files

Well ive bought one, basically as I have used cheaper cameras and I have found that after a few files are recorded the rest corrupt wasting some good footage.

However on the SJ4000 and gopro forums it seems this also happens and ends up with corrupt files. Has anyone any idea what causes this please ?

I think this is mainly due to the use of cheap under speed as cards.

If you have an android phone you can pop the camera sd card in to it and remove the videos off straight on to a USB stick plugged in the bottom of your phone with a OTG cable, a quid on eBay. Thus leaving your card clear to format in the camera at the end of everyday if you are away.

Can you sent video to public please? :-) There have been issues with charging socket detaching, I'd be tempted to take mine apart and add a little araldite with a heat gun...

The micro USB power socket which can be powered off the bike. I purchased a USB cigarette lighter plug that had a 3amp output to run the USB lead off. I drilled the waterproof plastic box with a 4mm drill as I hoped that the USB lead would pass through enough to power the camera, but unfortunately it didn't have enough length so had to drill it out to 10mm hence the mess of the hole. I was able to seal this with a rubber grommet. I wouldn't put it under a pressure washer but I'm confident it will keep the rain out.

My intention now is to chop the end off the cigarette lighter plug and solder a wire on and wire straight into the front auxiliary wires.

Be warned there is a step down to the voltage so do not wired direct into the bikes electrical system.

Zeb, they use a 5v micro USB phone car charger so I got one of those and just chopped the end off and soldered a pair of tail wires on and connected through an inline fuse to the front aux wires so still uses the 12v down to 5v.

The picture quality is comparible with the GoPro  but the sound quality is far better that anything I can get out of my GoPro - has to be the way to go me thinks as I'm looking to replace the GoPro Hero I have as I scratched the lens (silly boy).
