Title: extended warranty
Post by: tapps on April 14, 2014, 07:50:31 PM
I was going along the line's of not bothering with the extra 2 years warranty, after a lot of thought I decided to have it,piece of mind & all that,i didn't know if you tried applying for it after your initial 2 years warranty ended you could not purchase the additional 2 years cover.

Yeah it has to be consecutive cover, no gaps in between.

Well worth the money for piece of mind.

Not sure if I'm going ot bother or not,,,,,

plus point is selling privately with the extended warranty.....

negative is most of the problems that could go wrong could possibly be put down to wear and tear....something that needs looking into I guess.

It's insurance, and as such it = rip off.

Geoff, again I'm afraid you are wrong. For marginally less than £200 per year you have cover for parts and labour for your bike. Within the first year of my extended warranty alone I had one, yes, just one TPS replaced, and yet that in itself more than made the initial outlay of the extended warranty worthwhile. I've also had within the same period the end cap of the exhaust replaced as the paint was bubbling.  Within the initial warranty period I had a new preload shock adjuster fitted and a replacement full exhaust system fitted. Quite simply do the sums and it has to be a win, win situation.
If its not for you then so be it, simply don't buy it, but to say its a rip off is misleading and unjustified.

Steve, the 2 repairs that you mention wouldn't have cost any where near 200 quid to mend for anyone unfortunate enough to have the same faults with a bike outside warranty. There are lots of posts on here regarding people who could fix a battery into the TPS for next to nothing, plus a 5 pound can of wheel silver would have been more than adequate to fix the flaking paint on the exhaust. I still think that by the time you have paid hundreds of pounds in dealer servicing costs, in order to keep the extra warranty valid, the total paid is far in excess of 200 pounds. However I will concede that if you had a spectacular engine blow up, it would then be money well spent, but when was the last time you heard of a 1400cc bike engine doing that?. Insurance companies feed on peoples fears.  And it looks like they are doing good business.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree.

Next Friday my bike is going to get the shocker and both TPS replaced under warrantly. That alone has made it worth while. The warrantly is about the same cost as a pair of new tyres

Are you folks in U.K. getting what Kawasaki calls GTPP (Good Time Protection Plan)? or is this an interloper insurance coverage?

Here in U.S.A. we have GTPP, which is directly underwritten by Kawasaki, not a third party, and also the policy extends the original 36 month (USA) one by another 36 months, on top of that as long as your current (or extended) policy is in effect, you can purchase an additional one.

As the prior Technical Editor of The Concours Owners Group, I can say anyone that intends to get 10 years out of this bike is foolish for not extending. We have a dealership here that will sell these (US only) for $339 / 36 months.
TPM's cost that much alone, and we are all getting them replaced....Oh, warning, the new replacements are potted, and you cannot replace the battery in them at all... hold on to your old sensors....

I have followed this bike since prior to purchase, I bought my 08 on 7/07/2007...
there are plenty of issues we have seen here that make that plan well worth having, I am on my third.

Its just extended warranty supplied direct by Kawasaki. Its just over £300 for 24 months warranty. Unfortunately you can't keep on extending it here in the UK. Once the extended warranty is up its a question of looking on eBay for second hand parts.

As for the TPS, I agree if I was planning on keeping the bike long term. I like to change every 3 years if possible. That's not to say I want it to be someone elses problem, but by then I'm hoping someone will have figured out a way to replace the battery.

Potting the TPS? Now that IS a rip off.

Asif you mentioned it's just over £300, when I got mine and Nigel got his, it was £395.
