Post by: da_boom on August 19, 2010, 10:25:35 PM
Anyones elses 2010 model suffer from annoying vibration at about 4000 rpm? Is is specific to the breakin period. My right hand feels numb after a while. Its like riding a BMW all over again ...

I have an older model than you, a 2007 but my right hand still does go numb on long trips but I guess its something you just get used to?

da boom, how much mileage has your bike done? Seems to be a common problem on 2010 models. Don't think there is a solution. I've heard mentioned that it can be the thin grips, bar ends, nut/bolt not torqued properly, exhaust.

Its under warranty so I'd take it back to the dealer.

Just short of 3000 miles. Dealer has given up. Short journeys is fine, but for long distance a pain. I may try another dealer. As you say, it is under warranty.

Have you tried the extra heavy bar end weights (http://www.hvmp.com/kawasaki.htm)? Probably don't have to be the extra heavy ones as I have feeling its to do with resonance.

When I took the flies out there was a slight vibration in the right bar. Took out the exhaust baffle and that went away.

I'm tempted to buy a pair of bar end weights as the look so good.

thnx for the suggestion. The vibe is still there and i've kinda learnt to live with it. The tyres are ready for a change. Might even try those bar ends

I have a 2009 GTR and the vibration as well at anything above 4,000 rpm. This vibration occurs no matter what gear I am in. and like you my right hand is numb on anything but short distances. Kawasaki say there are "no reports at all of vibration problems" - but my local mechanic said "about 2 bikes in 20 have this vibration and no on knows why"

I now have 8,000kms on the bike and it's no better after really running in. I have the 021 Bridgstones and am still on the original tyres - so can't comment if a tyre change makes any difference. I will replace them with Michelin Pilot Road 2's soon.

I am taking the bike in to the workshop tomorrow - so the mechanics can have another go at finding the cause of the vibration.

I hope they get it this time - and I'll keep you posted.

'09 with 17,000 miles.  Very smooth, no vibrations.  Mine must be one of the 18 out of 20.

Hello Norman, I live in Spain and my mechanics are Spanish.

Please can you tell me in a bit more detail what "the flies" are and "which baffle" are you meaning?

I would like to tell my mechanics tomorrow and need to work out the translation !!!

Thanks for your help

Hi Alan,

I don't think the flies or baffle is the problem on your bike.
The flies are part of the throttle. Removing them gives more power. There's a thread in the forum - http://www.gtr1400.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,49.0.html

I have an after market remus hexacone from which I removed the baffle. I don't believe you can remove it on the stock exhaust.

Get your mechanics to look at the torque of bolts.  The exhaust bolts can be a culprit. Engine mounting as well. I'll have a think about what could ne the prob and post later

Thank you !!!!!!

I will be sure to tell them about this.

And hopefully you will have some other ideas later !!!

I would certainly check the exhaust header nuts. Does the vibration stop when you hold the bar ends? In any case, it maybe worth getting the bar ends re-torqued. (Or even the after market ones listed further up this thread).

The engine mounts might be overtightened, or the throttle may require syncing. Also the tank rubber mounts may need thread lock applied and re-torqued. I read ages ago that this can cause vibration.

Actually, thinking about it, the vibrations on my 08 came when I removed the tank to get to the flies. I think I'll be re-torquing my tank mounts this weekend and applying some medium thread lock

Some people have managed to eliminate the vibration by adding a washer between the grip and bar end

Hello again,

My mechanics in Spain have now had my GTR 1400 for two days. I gave them the list of possible vibration causes, but so far it's still got the vibration and they don't know why exactly.

I hope they find it soon.

I will keep posting

Is it a vibration or buzzing? On which side and at what rpm? Diagnosing these issues can be hard.

Have they tried putting a washer between the grip and bar end?
Title: Re: 2010 vibration
Post by: Sahagun on September 30, 2010, 06:33:46 AM
It's more like a vibration and it occurs at 4,000 rpm irregardless of what gear I am in. The vibration continues all the way to maximum rpm.

This vibration can be felt with both hands, through my feet on the pegs and through my knees on the tank. In other words it can be felt all over the bike and it seems therefore that it's a vibration and not a resonance of some sort. The end result of this is my right hand thumb and first two fingers going completely numb after about 20 to 30 minutes. (And, no, my gloves are not too small !!!!  I made sure I checked this too !!!)

Yesterday, at the garage, they had not yet fitted a washer between the grip and the bar end. They will do this today.

Will continue posting with more news as it comes.

Alan

But this vibration feels like a very high frequency buzzing, that can be felt all over the bike.

Hope they find something today!!

Well that definately does not sound right!
I have got used to the minor vibration I experience through the right bar and the occasional numbness in my right wrist, but what you are describing is totally different.

Hello Norman & Lonewolf,

I have just got the bike back from the mechanics - AND IT'S 100 TIMES BETTER !!!!

They re-torqued all of the engine mounting bolts which were about 3/4 of a turn too loose. Plus some other stuff - but the engine mounting bolts seemed to be the biggest culprit.

They also noted a slight uneven wearing of the front tyre, (8,500kms on it) and they adjusted the front suspension and damping back to the "standard" positions (5 clicks and 14mm)

The final result is that the annoying vibration has gone at pretty much all speeds - except those well in excess of legal speeds............but by then vibration is the last thing on my mind!!!

I have a 200km trip to make tomorrow......so I will give a better analysis afterwards.

Thanks to you all for your input and help.

Alan

Hi Alan,

I'm glad to hear the problem is resolved. I doubt the suspension or damping made any effect - I would be very, very worried if it did.

What tyre do you have on? If its the Bridgestone then you should be looking at replacing that with an alternative

I have the 021 Bridgestone original - but please see the PR2's thread.

Thanks

I was able to take the bike today for a much longer ride on both highways and two way roads with twisties - and the vibration (actually a very high frequency buzzing) has all but disappeared and makes the ride so much more comfortable and enjoyable.

It seems that the cause was the engine mounting bolts being wrongly torqued.

Great news for me !!!! Looking forward to putting on new tyres now !!

The tyres are almost due on my bike but won't be changing them till summer. Doubt I'll ride the bike at all during winter. Let us know how the PR2s go as I'm thinking of getting the same.

well glad i found this thread as i only picked up the bike a week or so ago and in the last 2 days have felt this buzzing /vibration ,was hoping it was sometyhing simple like torquing bolts especially on headers and engine mounts ,have just come from riding a cb 1300 so used to vibrations so wont panick to much.she due a service soon will get my mechanic to touque everything up aswell.Forgot to say mines a 08 with 9500 miles on it.

I wonder if the 2011 models will have the same issues. Or maybe i'll just get a ZZR instead.

Havent had a good read through the manual yet, but was wondering off hand does anyone know if theres a shaft adjustment on the gtr if so then this could be the problem for the buzz like feel.

Our 2010 GTR has just started to buzz at around 4k on both grips, RH worse than L, having done 3200 miles. I noticed it start while we were out on Friday. It's rather annoying.

Fortunately it's transient and disappears/becomes less noticeable as the rev's rise. It could well be something has come loose. I'm running PR2s not OEM tyres. It's due for a service in 300 miles so hopefully they can resolve it.

Sahagun .... just breaking mine in at the moment ..2011 model ... so havn't been above 4000 revs but around there and no vibes from this one ... what's the weather like at the moment in Spain ?? Dry like the UK but a little warmer I imagine ?

Hi Lord Rusty -- Amazingly we had really unseasonally warm weather in Spain at the end of Feb. It mad for some great riding time. But unfortuantely it's raining now and it should continue until next week. At least it's still 13 degrees !!!

I was in Gibraltar on Monday with my summer gloves on !!!

And my vibration has never come back since the engine mounting bolts were torqued up.

Good luck after you have finished the running-in !!

Hi folks, sorry to regurgitate this topic but I also have the dreaded 4,000rpm vibration.

I had the 2008 bike and it was perfect, not a hint of a vibe all its life till about 45,000kms when it started a little bit. Traded it in for the 2011 model and the bastid bike makes my hands go numb in any gear at 4,000rpm.

Brought it to two Kwak dealers and they both say that the vibe is there but Kawasaki UK say 'it's a characteristic of the bike'....... As my missus says, if it's a 'characteristic', why isn't it advertised in the brochure!!

I've set up this page to see if we can record how many have the problem, so if you do, 'like' the page and leave a comment about your vibration!
