Title: How to fit a new power connector?
Post by: Lonewolf on April 10, 2014, 12:02:58 AM
Imagine you are sat on the bike and looking forward. On the extreme right you have the 12v power cig lighter socket and on the left you normally have an identical socket which is capped off. When I got my bike it had already had a wired socket installed in this left hand socket but it was for some obscure connector and I would like to install a second standard 12v cig lighter style socket.
Behind the plastic facia which the socket would go in is a metal plate which extends to its right to encompass the left hand head light adjuster. Is there a way to access this side of the plastic facia without having to remove the entire headlight surround?
Any ideas gratefully received, photos would also be appreciated if available.

Hi Wolf,
I used a hole cutter of the correct size and drilled through the metal plate - then fitted the double usb outlet powered from the accessories wire. Worked a treat.
I understand Debs has done the same on her new 'Baby' also.

The problem is I can't drill through as there is a connector in there already which I want to remove. I can't get to the locking nut holding in the connector (which is behind the facia) at this time. It looks probable that I may have to remove the plastic strip holding in the headlight connectors and cig light adapter but even after reading the bikes manual I'm not too sure how to do it.

Ah understood, sorry,I have never stripped out that far. Is it possible that the locking nut is only finger tight on the back as it is so hard to get too?

It may only be finger tight however the locking nut is against the rear of the plastic facia and between that and the metal plate, so even if I was to release it I would still need to remove the metal bracket on the rear of the facia to completely remove the redundant power socket.

I ignored that silly blank panel and just drilled a hole in the fairing inner and fitted a permanently powered waterproof cigarette lighter socket there.
Useful for battery charger, tyre pump, and any other accessories I feel the need to run.

A fresh day, a fresh approach.
Previously I'd attempted to access the rear of the facia below the clocks and been unsuccessful, however I thought I'd have another stab at it as it had to be relatively simple, didn't it?  :sweatdrop:
I finally succeeded and have managed to remove the original, useless, obscure connector which was previously installed. Unfortunately the replacement cig adapter which I had already purchased is a non runner without a lot of messing around. It could be made to fit but I would have to chop into the rear metal plate which would result in me not being able to screw that particular section back in to the rear of the facia which could in turn affect the stability of the instrument panel as part of the metal bracket is bolted in to the frame.
Therefore I have gone for Plan B, I have just ordered one of these, http://www.windingroads.co.uk/shop/product.php/398/12v-din-powerlet-socket/d94d5c41928d9bb42a54c90eaa629890 (http://www.windingroads.co.uk/shop/product.php/398/12v-din-powerlet-socket/d94d5c41928d9bb42a54c90eaa629890)
The diameter of the barrel is 18mm which will easily fit through the opening on the metal bracket to the rear of the facia thereby allowing me to still use the fixing points (2 screws) and then bolt the end section of the metal clip in to the frame as intended. Additionally the 18mm diameter is just right to go through the previously created opening in the blanked cap of the facia panel.
To be honest it looks a quality part, dust and splash proof and better than what I had previously bought to fit the hole.

Wolf, it's been a while since you fitted this .... I am thinking of doing something similar.
Does the power socket you fitted & provided the  web link for accept "standard" 12v cigarette lighter plugs and have you got/posted any photos ?
Oh and did you run the wiring right back under the tank to fuse or  did you just link into the wiring from the factory fitted socket on the right hand side?
Cheers

Dave

Dai. I have 2 USB sockets. One each side. The one that fits on the left can be wired in to the existing 12v accessory wires in the boot under the upper fairing panel on the left.

Thanks for that Debs .... I wonder why they leave it blanked off anyway?

I never connected mine up to a power source I just wanted to replace the existing gadget in there as the cap which covered it was broken and I wanted to avoid corrosion etc settling in.
