Title: Go pro mount under the mirror
Post by: viper on April 08, 2014, 10:35:30 PM
I mounted my go pro under the mirror base and got some great footage. To get the go pro in a level position I had to use the J mount but this caused quite a lot of camera shake, the mount is secure and the mirror is solid and I could see the movement in the various components of the J clip.
for you guys that are using this mirror  position how did you get the camera level with out using several screw parts ??

I had mine mounted exactly as you have described but never had any shake in the footage. One option is to mount it straight onto the base plate and although the footage will be slanted that can be corrected in the editing stage.

Viper, I knew it was on here somewhere........have a look at my photos on page 1 of this link.

And here's a video from one of the original Go Pro's, they were never as sharp as the cameras Go Pro do today but nevertheless you get the idea.

OK dumb question of the week.

These hero go pro cameras in black run on batteries yes? Can you wire them into the bikes 12v system to save having to charge batteries all the time?

Or how long does a battery last if you simply kept it switched on?

Alan

I suspect that MG will have a solution for the power supply soon, but the battery life does depend on what you're doing. If you're taking snaps every second or so, it'll last for ages. If you record at 60fps 720p (on my original HD Hero) Then I get less than a couple of hours. If I film in 30fps, then the battery seems to last longer. (as does my SD card  )

Should be possible. Buy another enclosure, drill hole for USB power cable, wire in.

You'd have to step down the voltage I think

im currently working on a solution to power the gopro from the bike to the camera whilst keeping the camera within a waterproof housing .  ive currently got 5v power running to the unit through a modified usb connector which has wires trapped through the door seal, im currently working on a more robust method that utilises the bus connector on the back or dummy battery that is actually a live connector. these wires could run through a grommet in the deeper battery pac back door that ive now got.
Ive just built a" push to charge" switch that can be controlled whilst  on the bike . The gopro likes to be recording before it sense its charging circuit , so once im on the bike and the camera is running I can just hit the charge switch, this resets back to zero each time the bike is turned off.

standard battery last 1 hour 25 mins with video set at 1080 on narrow field 30 fps, 32 gb card last for 2 h 20mins

The easiest way to power the Go Pro camera from a 12v vehicle socket is to buy one of the skeleton camera housings and then simply use the USB connector on the side of the camera and plug the USB lead into a USB socket situated within the vehicles cig lighter adapter.

I had this connection set up with the previous Go Pro in the car, the battery never dies and you have continuous recording if you set the camera to loop. Simple.

I have done this but used the standard housing and cut a hole when the lead plugs in. A small grommet over the lead seals the hole. No problems yet.

hey pete, that's interesting , I thought of using a grommet but didn't think it would be good enough , does the grommet go around the plug rather than the lead and have you rain tested this set up ??

I haven't been brave enough to risk rain testing. I put a plain grommet over the bike then and rely on the battery as film looks lousy with rain spots on it from the cover.  :-)

you built my hopes up then .  you have drilled a hole and used a grommet and said you have had no problems , but haven't actually tested it in the rain!  proper confused .

I didn't understand this part of your post

My son in law has his own video business and is currently on his way to Melbourne, but is coming back via Thailand where he has a mate there who is in the same business, he is going to source me a go pro hero 3+ black which we will share as he has a need for it in his business  that way he can claim it back as part of his company equipment.

Then I shall pester you lot as to how to mount and power it.

I cut a hole the same size as the micro USB plug for a snug fit and just rotate the mount behind the screen when it looks like rain.

Same here. Drilled it out and filed it down until the plug fit tight. Works quite well.
