Title: Our leader takes The Wolf out for a ride.
Post by: Lonewolf on March 31, 2014, 09:42:46 PM
Yep, yesterday, Sunday 30th March Asif & I had a long overdue ride out through Snakes Pass, out to Derwent Valley, Lady Bower Reservoir and some other places which I've forgotten already.  :whistling:

The weather was kind to us, the bikes performed faultlessly and we were both armed to the teeth with our Go-Pro's for a bit of fun.  Plenty of bikes out enjoying the day and I have to say that the only numpty we saw was a car driver in a lime green Fiesta who overtook a cyclist but omitted to look forward to check for oncoming cars, that was a close call I can tell ya. Asif has it on video, perhaps he'll post it for our entertainment, I remember Asif shaking his head in disbelief!  :mfr_lol:

I've put a short video together, less than 10 minutes, of little snippets of the ride for you all to watch and laugh at, take the piss out of, pass constructive criticism on, whatever takes your fancy, we wont be offended.  :gunsmilie: Be sure to watch it in HD if possible.

As in I'll download it to my pc and then watch it
Watching it on YouTube itself is causing too many buffering issues. My net connection is only 2 meg which is the fastest I can get at the moment.

Great video Steve, many thanks for putting it together. Was a short and enjoyable ride for me given the time constraints I have!

I'll upload the crash the Green car almost had - both into the wall and the oncoming vehicle

Very good, but next time please angle the camera up a bit.
Because of the wide angle lens it looked like you were riding downhill the entire time.
Otherwise superb quality. Can't comment on sound as am at work.

Very nice Steve ... lovely scenery you have up there .. you Northern contingent are very lucky with your beautiful roads and views ... but why on earth has Asif got his panniers on ?  :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:

Boomer, will do. It's not something I'd picked up on but it's easy enough to rectify.

Rusty, probably for the same reason I had mine on, the GTR looks very good with the panniers on. It was interesting to note that at the end of the ride my bike was in the same dirty condition that Asif's was at the beginning of the ride.

I always ride with panniers on. Can't ever recall having them off!

The roads here are great. I think I might do the same route on my way home tonight!

Only if someone is going to benefit.

The car driver either hasn't seen you, or is expecting you to pass. 'Oncoming' should be far enough away to not be inconvenienced. That just leaves 'following' and then you have to watch out that they don't interpret your indicator as "I'm going" leaving you no option to abort if required. So for me, no I hardly ever indicate for an overtake except for dual c/w.

The only time I indicate to 'come in' is if I've been riding in lane 2 or 3 of a multilane road (dual/motorway) for sometime.

Zed, I've not heard of Holme Moss, the day after the ride I had to ask Asif to remind me where we'd been and he told me it was Snake Pass, I've only been on it half a dozen times before so it's easy to forget the name of the place.  :whistling:

Some roads are overrated IMHO e.g. Snake Pass, Helmsley to Stokesley, Cat & Fiddle. There are much better and quieter roads around. Be careful out there...

One of the problems with Snakes Pass, especially at the Glossop end is that both cars and bikes give it some around the bends and you often see both types of vehicles lose control. I hate speed cameras, but surprise surprise, where they are needed there are none.

Good vids fellas, thanks.  Maybe the Fiesta driver was concentrating more on the two GTRs behind  than in front ?   Agreed it was shocking driving but with no chance of a legal overtake imminent I think I might have backed off a little just in case.

That's nothing. Driving like that on the M25 is normal. I've seen someone look up,  brake violently and swerve to miss the car in front, then spin 360 degrees, recover and keep going,... and never even dropped his phone.
