Title: Heated Grips - Sticking Throttle.
Post by: SirToU on March 26, 2014, 09:36:05 PM
Greetings All.

For the first time ever, I have come across a problem that I haven't heard about before.

my bike is just short of 4 years old with 51500 on the clock.

If I use the heated grips, it makes the throttle stick open, if I leave it and turn off the heated grips, throttle is ok.

Anyone had that problem?

Neil

heat, expansion, heat causing something sticky to bind when it warms up.

any chance of getting the grip off and getting the throttle tube off and clean up , also get some lube down the throttle cables??

its a weird one !!

Ok with my limited technical ability it would seem that the heat from the hot grips are causing an expansion of the grip which in turn may be causing something else to stick or expand onto some other part that in turn works the throttle. As you can tell I know all the words and part bits but the basics are there !

If the throttle handle is ' grabbing ' inside the instrument mount on the bars, a good test will be to loosen the screws very slightly once the problem starts to occur ( when stationary obviously ), if the throttle then frees up, theres your problem.....if not. expansion of that area is eliminated.
I get this problem frequently with plastic door locks, lubing won't help.....so its out with the emery.....

Could try backing off the bar end weight to see if its binding on that before digging deeper into the fault.

Not had a problem with my 1400 but no heated grips.
The 1000 has Oxford heated grips and once or twice a year I remove the tube, clean up the handlebar and inside the tube, and re-grease with Lithium spray grease.
As a result have a very smooth throttle.

Its doing it to mine Neil.. Noticed today that throttle is slightly sticking on when heated grips are on.. Same year as yours.

Thanks all, I'm pretty sure its heat expansion, but I've just turned them off.

It doesn't bother me, and I think its great, but thats because of Motogymkhana - need the throttle on!

However, on a serious note, this could scare or cause a serious accident!

will advise what I get around to sorting it out.

Thanks

Neil
