Title: Non RPM-generated resonance in upper cowling
Post by: bacaruda on March 23, 2014, 04:14:46 PM
At around 60 mph, I get a resonance/vibration sound in the upper cowling area (sounds like its from the left side). dies out at 80 mph. Has nothing to do with the engine rpm, and probably not the windscreen. (no difference if I move the screen up/down or grab the screen itself) I thought that I had it sorted out by putting back a missing grommet that fixes the right inner gowling upper part (the plastic rivet behind the screen) but no difference. Have removed both inner cowling parts (the one with the glove compartment) and tried to find any loose screws/bits/pieces. No luck so far. Any suggestions? (aside from driving faster than 80 all the time....) Any known possible sourses that can be attacked?

can you take the bike out without the upper cowling bits on ( glovebox ect ) and touch things as you are riding along?

I have narrowed the source of resonance to be purely by speed wind (is that the correct word for it?). Driving behind a "fast" van (ambulance on a mission...) and moving in and out of the slipstream made me conclude that. Position of mirrors/ screen does not make any difference. So it's probably something below the headlight part of the cowling that generates the noise. So next step is to remove those cowlings and take it for a spin.

last update:
stripped of the lower/middle cowling, keeping the headlight cower and mirrors. Still buzzing.

Stripped all the cowling from the Thunder nugget. (Without the cowling, it becomes almost as ugly as a versys   ) .
The noise is gone or almos not noticeable (might be that the headlight cower acts like a resonace box that enhances the vibration.)
Last saturday:
Tightens every nut/bolt that I can reach and put all the cowling back on.

The noise is GONE!  Hurray! rides happily for 5 days.
Yesterday when riding to work, att the exact same speed as before. Same frigging resonance noise

I'm givving up....My next sollution is to have the screen so low that the windnoise drowns it.

Sounds like one of the nut/bolts has come loose

I think there's some really light thread lock that can be used. It prevents nuts/bolts coming loose but isn't so restrictive that that you can't open them at all

Might be, or maybe parts of the cowling need some distance material between the different parts.
I will take some of the cowling off again to get my rad guard in place. Will look for loose bolts/nuts.
Last effort and I hope that it will help.

Mounting the rad guard this morning at took the black beauty for a long test ride.
Noise is gone again....

Might be that it was something in the radiator that vibrated and the rad guard changed the airflow. I put self adhesived foam around the perimeter of the rad guard to protect the rad, and maybe that put pressure to the rad on the right place to damper the resonance.
Or it can be that the outside temperature finaly climbed above 15 degree C. The vibration came late last season (november and almost sub-zero temp).
If thats the case, then I got a accoustic warning that the riding season is over.
Bike start buzzing = park it and go into hibernation....
