Title: A paddock stand with a difference.
Post by: Lonewolf on March 14, 2014, 07:33:57 PM
I recently sent bs-motoparts-uk an email asking if such a paddock stand was made for a GTR, regrettably its not. However if the demand was there.... :whistling:

It's expensive, I agree, but it looks extremely well made and easy to use. If a few more of us contacted bs-motoparts, who knows they may manufacture one.

Hi wolf.
I saw them demonstrating this at the bike show.
As you say a bit pricey but a cracking bit of kit. :agree:

i think abba do a stand very similar to that one , these are pricey but seem to do a lot more ,i cant see them being as easy to use as they look in the video,http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=r7PExjCtC9Yi ahd an abba stand for my last zzr and found it  a bit of a job to lift  my bike .much  happier
with my front wheel chock and  rear paddock stand .

Abba don't list one for a GTR but they do for a ZZR, do both bikes have the same apertures for bobbins etc on the side frame?
Title: Re: A paddock stand with a difference.
Post by: davetherave on March 15, 2014, 11:15:41 AM
I have the "normal" Abba stand and front wheel lift which I'm sure would fit a GTR, the beauty of the Abba system you buy the stand and just change the adaptor pegs from bike to bike.

Would have been useful today in changing the tyres. Could have taken both wheels off at the same time

So if that does work on a ZZR would it work on a GTR? Any ideas? If in doubt I'll call them on Monday to find out.

Also does the zzr weigh the same as the gtr? Wonder if the lift will handle the weigh difference.

the gtr is around 65 kilo's heavier think you would have to get in touch with abba,
Title: Re: A paddock stand with a difference.
Post by: Lonewolf on March 17, 2014, 02:05:24 PM
Ok, I called ABBA Stands this morning and although they have assured me that the Sky Lift is more than capable of lifting the GTR, regrettably they are unable to produce anything that is compatible with the GTR to lift it as there are no suitable lifting points on the side of the frame as there are with other makes/models. This, they said is mainly down to the fairing. Additionally they said that because the GTR is shat driven, that in itself causes problems for the lifting devices.

So it looks like its a big fat NO, sorry Asif for getting you giddy!

I guess that only happens at 150mph  :mfr_lol:

Gents just to stop any confusion here, I have the "normal" Abba paddock stand with a front wheel lift which fits under the exhausts, noy the version in the vid, but it can easily get both wheels off the ground for cleaning/maintenance purposes.

Abba said that that wouldn't work on the GTR because of the fairing but looking at that vid clip there appears to be loads of room either side of the Abba stand.

No, if you have a look at Abba's web site they have attachments to the stand shown on the above video which will allow both wheels to be raised from the ground and removed. Looks a good system, but as I said, currently they state that their systems wont work with our bikes.

Put the bike on the centre stand, take the rear wheel off, then put a trolley jack ( or other ) under the exhaust collector and raise till the front wheel comes off the ground the remove the wheel ( after you have loosened all the relevent bolts / fender etc ). i do this all the time when i require tyres / servicing / cleaning, etc.

I'm with Zedmeister. I put the centrestand on a piece of 2" thick wood, remove the rear wheel, then jack up and remove the front wheel
Then put axle stands under the front forks and a scissor jack under the rear axle.
Stable enough to withstand a jostling.
Way cheaper than £300+ for yet another piece of occasional use kit to clog up the garage.

Post by: BigAlan on March 18, 2014, 09:21:44 AM
I put my bike on the centre stand and removed the rear wheel, i also placed the rear of the bike above the ground anchor i have in the garage and using ratchet straps tied them round the rear of the bike and winched the front up, easy peasy. I did however put my trolly jack under the engine just in case, you can never be to careful.

Wolfie
Check all your clearances for the bike both pre lift and post lift before use. I used my abba stand with my previous Vstrom, and had to remove the rider footpegs each time before using the stand.
Not a major problem, but  worth checking all your clearances before bending a brake or gear lever.

hi wolf if you have ordered direct from abba shouldn't take long for delivery, please be careful when you first try the stand out ,i would recommend two  people at first  just to make sure it is clear of everything when you lift the bike also as i said although it is a good bit of kit i found it to be a bit awkward at first till i got used to it ,as i said i think it is practise and a bit of a knack to use them at first ,hope it all works well for you

I would be very interested in seeing one in action on the GTR

Doebag, I will check all the clearances, thanks for the tip.

Keith, I bought it off Ebay last night and then went over to collect it from Leeds. It has a fitting kit for it, not sure which bike the kit is for, I might have to order another fitting kit from Abba before I can use the stand however there may also be a way around not having to do that, I'm just looking at options at the moment.

Debs, consider it done, as for the video, you don't want much do you?  :mfr_lol:  However since you asked so nicely I will do it for you. Just bear with me please while I either adapt the fitting kit which came with it or order another one.

to get back onto topic.....judging by the stand and the weight of the nan surely it would be a cheaper option to buy one of those stands from the curry shop , if it will hold the weight of that nan i am sure it would be strong enough to hold the gtr ,it would be a lot cheaper than an abba .

Hi, yes an update. Regrettably it's not going to be a winner unfortunately. There is a way I could get it to work but it will be a bit faffy so I'm not going to bother. I spoke with Abba and they supplied me with a fitting kit that will fit the GTR even though they don't specifically manufacture a kit for the GTR.
The snag is the fixing points on the GTR are too high and you cant get the leverage for pivoting with the stand that you need. An option would be to create a raised plinth on the garage floor whilst having the bike wheels on the original garage floor. Additionally the gear lever gets in the way and has to be detached.

So it looks like I'll have to consider getting a proper bike lift.
