Title: A question.....
Post by: Kall1400 on March 11, 2014, 07:39:18 PM
On the UK motorways i believe there is NO MINIMUM speed limit. But for the normal road user i believe 50mph is regarded as the slowest speed you would do so not to attract the blue lights of doom. :police: ( please educate me if i am wrong) i accept there are vehicles that do go slower such as Heavy or Wide loads, Escorted loads etc...

So my question is, if this is the case. How would you, if you were driving a 44t truck through road works signed at 50mph deal with a car doing 30mph in lane 2?  :hammer:
Baring in mind it would be against the law for my vehicle to use lane 3 to pass HER.....

I wont say how i delt with the situation yet, but just curious on the views of.....
Motor bike riders,
Car drivers,
Truck drivers,
Our fantastic Police forces...
And advanced drivers.
And generally any one who wants to comment.

I sit back with a brew and wait with a full packet of ginger snaps....

I would flash my lights, honk the horn, if that did not work as a last resort although an illegal move i would have to undertake her. I would not tailgate.

It would annoy the hell out of me but in fairness i dont think the 30 mph is too slow due to the reduced speed on that stretch, if they are an unexperienced drive i cant see a police officer having an issue with it, the lane discipline maybe a problem tho, where they ablke to move over to lane 1 ?, you say roadworks, so were all 3 lanes available?

And were the roadworks signed posted ' stay in lane ' ?

I think that you've made that story up just so that you can heap some well deserved praise upon the broad shoulders of the members of this forum who are also members of the underpaid, underrated, and overworked members of her majesty's police force.  :mfr_lol:

Patience is a virtue in situations like that, just drop back and turn up the radio

No "stay in lane" sign.
Lane 1 empty and available
Lane 3 empty and available.....

Turn up the Radio OC ????    Turn DOWN the radio and listen out for bikes  :whistling:

No "stay in lane" sign.

In that case then, exactly as Zedmiester pointed out..........don't tailgate.......I hate that as its un-nerving for small cars and un-necessary.

Lane one - overtake.  Be careful and be prepared to deal with lane two driver with an audible warning

Road works with all 3 lanes available!

no problem with the speed just the lane discipline , 30 in a 50 is like 50 in a 70 which im sure you wouldnt have a problem with.

Im guessing you tailgated the car and scared the hell out of it with your 44 ton killing machine, doing nothing to dispel the image of the aggressive truck driver, sorry !

Winnie - just curious, if i moved to lane 1 to pass is this then classed as an overtake or undertake.

Me personally, if there was an opportunity to safely pass the slower moving vehicle in lane 1, while it remained in lane 2, then that is what I would do. However if I had any inclination that to do so would be un-necessarily hazardous due to perhaps the vehicle in lane 2 not being particularly stable, i.e. the occasional drifting I would stay put, give them plenty of room and just wait for them to pull back in to lane 1 and then if it was safe and appropriate to do so I would pull out into lane 2 and pass them.

If they didn't change their lane position then I would just stay put and be patient and navigate the road works until things improve.

Now i have finished my ginger snaps and two cups of tea i will explain..

I backed off to approx two truck lengths and matched her speed. Turned on my rear yellow strobes to warn the following traffic and stayed there.....

No flashing head lights, no under taking, no tailgating. But sat calmly behind her until the end of the road works. At which point she accelerated away, still in lane 2, i might add.

Happy that i had done a good deed for the day in stopping a potential accident, i accelerated to 56mph and returned to lane 1, turning off my rear strobes....

At which point the blue lights of doom pulled me into the services and gave me a lecture about hogging the middle lane.......

You cant do good for doing bad........

Got to admit Kall, you deserved it about time people were pulled over for hogging the middle lane, long may it continue.Drives me up the wall when they do that, no consideration for other road users. Truck drivers are no angels either, pulling out on vehicles at a seconds notice, taking an age to overtake, thankfully not all are the same.

I assume you didn't read my last post before posting this......

And.... As you have mentioned it.... Trucks that pull out at a seconds notice, is only a seconds notice if you are not paying attention to what's going on in front of you or are speeding.

On the point of over taking.... I don't think there is a law on how fast you have to over take. But if it isn't fast enough for you and us truck drivers are getting in your way and slowing you down. Try leaving 10 mins earlier, then you wouldn't be in a rush.......

Kall, I can see both sides to this. Potentially your actions have protected the slow moving vehicle from being shunted, that's a good thing obviously. I personally don't have an issue with HGV drivers, they are a hazard on the road, but then so is every other vehicle and you just deal with it in your planning and I cant honestly recall any situation when a HGV has caused me any major grief.

I've met some great HGV drivers whilst working with our mutual friends, (VOSA) and whilst doing HGV checks at weigh bridges and the vast majority of them or top notch drivers. Don't get me going on the Polish drivers who seem to think they are immune to drivers hours, they are a ticking time bomb in my opinion.

Sometimes you try to do right and you end up being the bad guy!

Kall - read the last few words of my post carefully 'thankfully not all are the same'. I have excellent forward observation but i do choose not to argue with 44ton,  If i left 10 minutes earlier i would probably meet the driver who is 10 minutes late  :mfr_lol:

Kall, perhaps I've misread something somewhere, but you said you returned to lane 1, yet lanes 1 and 3 were free. So how come you were in lane 2 catching up the slow car and not in lane 1?

Personally if I was in lane 1 I would have crept past being as the three lane switch is not really practical (legal) in a lorry. Even in a car or on a bike, as long as you don't blast past on the inside you'd be very unlucky to get tugged. Keep dancing from lane to lane and you will.

I don't drive a lorry but if I did there would be wreckage everywhere.  :gunsmilie:
All the white van/BMW/Audi driving, phone using, lane hogging, dithering, inattentive, half blind, inconsiderate, lazy  :censored: :censored: :censored: would be no more.  :death:
I would be in jail for life but once cleaned up the roads would be a safer place to be due to all of the above not being on them any more,.... and due to me not being on them any more either.

Seriously, I would have pulled into lane 1 and undertaken if safe to do so.
In fact I do this many times every day due to number of the above  :censored: :censored: :censored: on the M25.
I watch them pull onto the M25 and head straight for the right lane, and then slow down to 60.
Then when you either flash them or undertake they get all huffy and start waving hands and fingers about.
:shit: :hammer: :censored: :asshole:  :taz:  :nuke: :rip: is too good for them.

The minimum speed limit on Motorways is 30Mph unless otherwise signposted.
I believe that this is lower if not cancelled in roadworks.
IMHO 30Mph is bloody dangerous on a motorway and personally I would set it to 50Mph.

By the way, would someone from our Law Enforcement community know why the Govt decided to introduce the fines/points for lane hogging and phone using yet didn't see fit to fund the extra Police to enforce the new laws? Don't the Traffic Wombles have the right to nick people for these offences?

Some drivers are not aware of different speed limits and lane restrictions that apply to trucks. Standard SPECS average speed cameras photograph FRONT number plates...

Vehicles travelling at 49.5 MPH filling all lanes is usually the final scenario.

Why don't lorry drivers slow down to let there "comrades" overtake quicker ?. No tachograph excuses allowed...:-)

No sorry Boomer Highways Agency Traffic Officers or HATO don't have the powers to nick people, but they can report it....... Same as you ;-)
