Title: Hello from Oldham.
Post by: 1 kwack 1 yam on April 17, 2011, 11:28:46 PM
Hello to everyone. Been a member of the forum for about a month now and thought it was about time I introduced myself. My name is Glenn, I'm 54 years young and have just bought myself an A9f GTR 1400. Been biking on and off since I was 16 and have numerous bikes over the years, the last one being a Yamaha XJR 1200SP. Hence the name.......1 Kwack, 1 Yam. I thought I had researched the GTR very well before I bought it, but didn't come across this forum until afterwards. I have read lots of your articles, most of which are informative and interesting.
My one complaint about the bike is the sore backside after not many miles. I have read about the gel seat, the Corbin seat and a few others but can someone honestly recommend a good, comfortable seat.
A quick fix I carried out a few years ago was to fit handlebar risers which, at that time, seemed to give a more upright and comfortable riding position. Has anyone tried this on the GTR1400 and if so, what was the result? Hope someone has the answer!

I've generally found the seat tolerable, although admittedly after a trip to Scotland and back in a day which I did when I first got the bike my bum was a bit sore. What I sometimes use now if I know I am going to do big mileage is to wear a pair of cycle shorts/boxers. They have specifically designed padding in all the right places and are a cheap fix at about £20ish a pair. And they do the job.

welcome 1k1y .....i'm a big lad and seem to get on with the seat, rode from Berkshire to Rochdale a few weeks ago and didn't really feel any discomfort...the tank needed re-filling before i got uncomfortable.....have you thought about maybe adding an airhawk for those longer journeys  ??? as they are relatively inexpensive, although that being said i like the idea about cycling shorts ::)

Hi

I think with most new or relatively new bikes the seat has to be "broken in" particularly if it has gel packs in them. The other aspect is one's bum has to also get used to the new seat.

I find the standard GTR seat comfortable. I did acquire a second hand Kawasaki lower seat for the GTR and I don't find that as comfortable for various reasons - partly because I haven't used it enough to reshape the gel packs and the shape of it. When I have some money I will probably get the custom altered.

Kind regards

Steven

Welcome aboard Glenn.

If you want the ultimate in comfort you need a Russell DayLong.
http://www.day-long.com (http://www.day-long.com)
Will cost about £500 all in but you can ride all day long (hence the name).
The saddle of choice for most of the IBA loonies.
I have one on my GTR1000 and had one on my 1400.
If i ever get out of debt, I'll be buying another one for my 1400.
In the meantime, Bagman's missus is loving the passenger comfort of my old DayLong.  :(

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to give the cycling shorts a try.
Boomer: I looked on "Day long" web site and really liked the look of one particular seat but I think it will have to wait a while until 'er indoors says yes. They are rather expensive, are they not? Quite like the look of the "Corbin" seat also. Did N.B. not have one of these? Would you reccommend one?
I've sent off for some handlebar risers today. They lift the bars by 50mm and bring them back by 32mm. It doesn't sound a lot, but should make a difference. I'm told they will slot in without any wires and hydraulic pipes needing alteration.........I'll keep you informed.

Yes, I did have a Corbin and the reason I sold it was that it was hard for my butt. My friend has one which is well worn in and is much more comfortable

N.B. Is your friend local and do you think he might let me have a look at it. Is it on a Gtr1400?

He's local now and then. Lives in London and comes to Huddersfield every few weeks.
His seat is on a Pan European

Ah Oldham. I pass it every day on my commute. Its a dump  ;D About as bad as Bradford  ;D I think I've mentioned both points before - nothing like pressing them home!

However, the outskirts of Oldham are beautiful. Plenty of nice rides around there.

too true!! ::) ..... however if you take the road through Norden and over Owd Betts/Knowl Hill (which is a nice road in itself), then there's good roads galore

****. I thought I know my area pretty well but never heard of those two places. Google will be my friend

Norden is a suburb of Rochdale...effectively you're looking for the road over to Haslingden/Rawtenstall, and from there the worlds your oyster
