Title: Normandy D-Day POIs
Post by: Stephen.Stallebrass on February 22, 2014, 10:26:25 PM
:tank:

Thought you lot might appreciate this list of the best Normandy POIs. It's not an exhaustive list of all the sites, just some of my own faves. Remember the Normandy battlefield was huge so there are hundreds if not thousands of monuments, memorials, vestigies, museums and cemeteries.

If you click on the google maps link, you can download the KML file and then use that to convert to whatever format you need... not done that yet. If anybody does it before I get round to doing it, please feel free to post it.

Any thoughts on which is better? Self guided or a tour company like Overlordtour?

Any thoughts on which is better? Self guided or a tour company like Overlordtour?

My standard mantra on this is that it depends on the level of detail you want and how much you already know. 'Most' guides won't give you much more than you can get from a good guidebook. If you're already bit of a history buff and or you just want to tour the major sites go with a decent guidebook. The Major Holt guide is excellent as is any of the guides from the battlezone or the battleground Europe series'. However, what you get with a good battlefield guide is local knowledge. I always recommend Paul Woodage D-Day Historian (http://www.ddayhistorian.com/) (formerly of Battlebus fame), he is the BEST battlefield guide of the for the Normandy area - THE go to guy for anybody who wants to know anything about Normandy.

What you don't want is a guide that will just take you to museums, you can do that yourself. What you want is a guide to tell you facts and stories of the battle and anecdotes from the actual veterans themselves. This is what you get with Paul. If you have a relative that was in the battle let him know and he'll tailor the tour for you. The most important thing is to remember that every inch of ground was fought over and the operational area is massive and took many weeks... what this means in practice is that if you won't learn about the battle in 1 or 2 days, especially if you like long lunches. If your time is short focus on one or two specific aspects, operations or unit actions, and remember most of the battle was thought inland.

On the 6th June the Zenith IMAX, Caen are showing a 40 minute 3D Documentary 'D-Day Normandy 1944'.

Tickets are FREE. I knew of 3 evening showings but they're full. However, when I contacted them they offered me a morning showing, which I snapped up - they're going VERY quickly.

If you want a ticket get in there now. Contact the Calvados General Council who will mail you the tickets - if there are any left...
