Title: 1st Ride
Post by: No73 on February 19, 2014, 09:59:01 PM
Hi

Well I collected the new addition, a 2010 GTR1400 today from Kawasaki Centre in Lanner Cornwall, it was raining lol, so I set out on my journey home.

1. It felt far more nimble than I expected (so well done Kawasaki)

2. Totally planted never a worry, despite the wet conditions and travelling on a variety of A and B roads and ending my journey on a very poor back road (loose gravel
     puddles etc)

3. Brakes were good, wait to see how good they are in the dry when I start to push it a bit

4. A general impression of smooth effortless power. (I hit a bit of dual carriage way (uphill) and passed a couple of cars looked down and thought  :oops:I am breaking
   the law)

5. Gearbox - excellent

6. Throttle - a bit snatchy but soon got to grips with it, riding a Firestorm, helped I think.

7. Heated grips, why have I never had them before - absolutely fab

8. Exhaust -lmao - its going to be changed

9. Wind noise, well I have never really noticed it before (all my bikes have just been noisy) , the GTR is so quiet and refined and sitting behind the fairing, well it was a bit
    surreal really

10. loved the riding position, although not sure about rear brake position felt a little clumsy, but I will adapt

The Bike has had a lowering kit fitted by the  previous owner so I had no problem putting both feet flat on ground and I a 30 inch inside leg measurement, I will put the standard links back into suspension and try it, I think it may make the Bike even more agile, my first ever shaft drive and really did not notice it at all, so all in all I was impressed and ended the journey with a smile on my face despite the weather.

Then my problems started it will not fit through the door into my Bike shed. so  weekend building a double door awaits, Its now safely looked away in my mates Garage.

Glad you liked it, but it is a fat pig of a bike width wise, you can forget filtering like you did on a firestorm.

If the shed doors just a slightly too small you can always unscrew the mirrors, it's only 3 small torx head screws underneath the mirror pivot. I have to do it to mine when I go to my partners house. Only takes a minute when you know what your doing.

Take some advice off here on what exhausts can be fitted with no issues to running. Ive seen dozens of threads over the years where owners experience poor running, vibrations and other issues as most A/M exhauts require remapping. Cant remember which ones but there are some on here who have had no problems with their exhaust.
Im personally ok with the stock exhaust, its a cool wall technology which is what you need so close to panniers, its quiet and economical which i like , if i ever ended up under the bike its nice to know that it not going to be 800 degress lijke your average stainless steel one.

Hi all
thanks for the welcome,

I am a 52 year old British Male living down in Sunny Cornwall  just outside Truro, so if anyone is down around here. give me a shout

Cool Wall technology - Panniers, has anyone had problems with their aftermarket exhaust damaging the panniers?

I prefer a louder exhaust, because I believe people become aware of you a lot sooner. But I do not want to go down the remapping route.

Yes filtering in traffic is going to be different, take the water wings off the back and it will be better lol, but it is a  :tank: for sure.

Its a rather deep Metallic Blue, reminded me of my old Z650C3 (which is the only bike I wish I had never sold)

I will post some pics asap, also I will try and do a piece with pics of my trip down to Spanish Moto GP in  April -May. (riding down with 5 other bikes (A brand new Harley Fat something or other, Triumph955i, Yamaha R1, Suzuki GSXR600, and another R1) I know which bike I want to be on to do 2000 miles odd!

Be safe everyone

Top tip, unfold your mirrors before riding so you don't forget about panniers and catch them on garage wall etc. ...:-(

sounds good, im in the market for a GTR, doing my research first,,as for filtering , i do it on a rocket 3 , never bothered me till i got too cocky , just a nice trail of car mirrors and doorhandles behind me ;-) , im not joking,  it went horribly wrong lol , the Rocket scraped down the side of a vw lupo and pushed his door panel right in, i deflected off the lupo into an audi estate , passenger door remoddeled , i finally came to rest on a fiat . Was a bad day , my pride had been violated by my ego , i dont filter anymore. Filtering in Germany is illegal , my insurance covered it but what a pain in the ass, the Rocket crash bars front and rear didnt get marked at all , not a scratch anywhere on the bike to be seen.Congrats on the bike, ride safe

Filtering in Germany is illegal

I didn't know it was illegal until I got to a biker hotel in Austria. I was telling them about my trip down and the accidents and how I filtered.. Thats when they said.. OOPS  :mfr_lol:

yeah gotta watch out  for differences in the continental highway code,,firstly there isnt one , in the UK the emphasis is on making progress, only when you make progress does traffic move, this logic has no effect on the deaf ears of German coppers, they are very efficient though , i was fined a told off within 2 minutes and then they went on their way with their BMWs,, Filtering with blue lights going,,,Hypocracy leaves a real shitty taste in your mouth.

Coming back from Austria in 2003 (GTR Club Europe Rally) we hit traffic on the Munich bypass (it's NOT a ring road).
I started filtering and after about 5 miles I had a train of Germans working hard to follow me. Practice makes perfect.
I guess they assumed that the Politzei would nick me first.  :mfr_lol:
I eventually outran them all and 6 miles later had the whole motorway to myself,... after clearing the wreckage from the 5 vehicle fender-bender.

Autobahns are nice but can be scary. I once had a Porsche close on me so fast I thought I was parked.
I was doing 130Mph at the time. Guess he was doing nearly 200 before he hit the brakes.
