Hi all,
I am keen to attempt to wire in my tomtom rider 3. Anyone any experience of wiring any nav unit NOT using the cig lighter outlet? Want to keep it free for other odds and sods. Is there an easy connection up round the cockpit / clocks area rather than running back to the battery?
Any help esp photos much appreciated.

:ohplease:
as the satnav only pulls a couple of amps you can wire it in most places.hs it got its own inline fuse ? If you are able to use one of those scotchblock connectors then just take a feed from the front side light wire and then use the bike frame somewhere for the ground wire. You can access the wire easily without taking stuff off. keep your cables neat and tidy with small cable ties and leave some slack to allow for the sterring lock left to right.
I solder and heatshrink all my connections but you can use a scotchbloc
buy using a switched item you wont leave the satnav on and flat the battery. never been keen on wiring things straight to the battery unless done correctly via a relay, but thats a bit more advanced for some diyers, good luck and Pm me if you need any clarification

Thanks viper, and thanks for the vid. I have a few of those from my GS days. Haven't looked too closely at lights but will give it a go. The sat nav cable is very light gauge though so hopefully the side light cable is the same. Which colour is the "live" on the lights or is it self evident. Am at work so can't check at the min.
Thanks again
Don't know how it is with the 2007, but my 2013 has a set of male/female bullet socket connectors under the left side cover (on post 2010 bikes the cover that houses the "glove compartment"). Under the cone shaped rubber cover. I will try to find pictures. Real easy work to connect my Zumo to those.
Use the accessory connectors under the left hand cover. If you put your hand under the left hand cockpit cover ( the black panel as you look from the riders position) you'll find a round open ended plastic tube covering the wiring. Inside the tube will be two bullet connectors, one ignition live, one earth. They are provided to connect your sat nav etc to. It saves you cutting into wiring.

Ski, as promised have a look at this old thread, http://www.gtr1400.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=72.0 (http://www.gtr1400.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=72.0)
Be careful taking the left fill panel off the bike to get to the cables, its flexible to a degree as is the fairing but be mindful that you don't snap any lugs off the bike. Likewise when refixing, the screws only need to be finger tight, don't sprain the lugs.
Take the glove box off the tank, slacken off (or remove the left side fairing if you wish to give yourself more space), just take your time and think about what you either need to remove or loosen.
Thanks all for your valuable guidance. Got it sorted so can now find my way home from the shop now ;)
Thanks again

Two large and obese (black / red) wire from the battery up under the tank. Here - fit a standard 12V relay fed from active 12V (+) lead, so you only have active power when the ignition = on. Be sure to include fuses before power source/s. No need for fancy BigPowerBoxes or whatever they are named!
