Title: Polar Bear Challenge!
Post by: Stephen.Stallebrass on January 24, 2014, 08:54:06 PM
Right then... Winter is upon us good 'n' true, so I propose a challenge.

Who has ridden their GTR in the coldest and narliest of temperatures? Post a pic of your dash - if you don't post a pic it didn't happen, LOL.

You must have actually ridden it, not just nipped out to take a piccie while your car was defrosting! No other cheating... :nono:

I'll start:

Ignore the time I hadn't reset the clock since disconnecting the battery, it was actually about 0830.

That's so unfair..... Last  year was -7... Now I won't get out in a ride that's going to be long enough....  :-(

It was this Wednesday, a lovely crisp and fresh morning... it was one of those days where the fog freezes on the outside of your visor.

I think Rusty once had a ride home at -7, but I never saw a photo.

Stephen,

Im surprised your running your brake biased on the strongest in that temperature, more chance of skidding I would have thought ?

I can't get close to that temperature though, all this equipment wasn't on the bikes when I used them everyday, you knew it was cold when you had to put your hands under the cold tap to thaw out once at work !!!!   :mfr_lol:

I know it's not the GTR we're talking about, but back in the dim and distant past when I was 16  ( 1977) I had a 10 mile commute on a Puch MS50  ( which is still in my shed )

Remember those times when diesel had no additives and froze in lorry tanks?  well this particular morning there were drivers lighting fires under their tanks to thaw it out on the A6 North of Leicester..... got to work and the thermometer outside the building said -14C

I had the Puch M 50 sports when everyone else had Fizzies and AP50s, looked like a much bigger bike, never ever saw another one

Does that include me now?  Although aren't I further North with OC?

To be honest, its warmer here than it was in Cambridge!

Pah! I've got no chance!

+12°C again today and clear enough for me to see the mountains from my apartment.

Although three years ago I did ride across the Belledonne mountains in France at -6, but don't remember taking a pic of the dash...  I think that's the coldest I've ridden in.

I will never forget when I used to live in the UK, when on my way to work on my trusty ZZR, the back wheel spinning up on the ice on the bypass at 70mph....  I was only cruising - not even accelerating!  Ever since then, I've not much liked riding in icy weather for some reason

This thread is biased against the 08/09 owners.  :gun_bandana:
We don't have a thermometer.
Neither does my GTR1000 which I have been riding for 3 months now.

Does loss of body parts through frost bite count ?

Boomer, then you must upgrade your bike for this challenge.

Charlie, loss of body parts only count as a minor flesh wound, you need to man up.

Viper, a Merc and it doesn't have an integrated sat nav? Shame on you for buying the inferior model.... :whistling:

I spent 8k on extras for that car and refuse to pay the 2.5k for the " navigation pack ", which is not as good as a garmin and soon goes out of date. In my beemer i got one of those dvd player/satnav double size  head units off ebay that your retro fit, its awsome and only cost £180

Nah, traction control is for wimps and linked brakes are for pansies.  :punk:
I'll stick with my 07 and my 1989 GTR1000 thanks.

I rode in -20C in Germany in 1984. Was +2C when I left Belgium 6 hours earlier. By the time I got to the outskirts of Munich I'd been following the snowplough for 30 miles and had no choice but to follow him into his depot. They warmed me up with a heater and some coffee. I had icicles from each nostril to my upper lip. They really hurt coming off!
The bike (Z1300/6) didn't make it to the office in downtown Munich. I locked and abandoned it after dropping it for the 4th time and walked the last 2 miles.
I delivered the damned package though! Took 9 hours when the normal was 5.
Heated grips, heated jacket, heated trousers, heated socks and lots of layers, oh and an uprated alternator and bigger battery.
I was used to riding in -5C but that was ridiculously cold!

+1 Viper .... even if I spent a load of money on a top of the range car ... £2000+ for the sat nav when you can get a perfectly decent one for £200 .. madness !
