Title: Sat Nav
Post by: PRD on December 26, 2013, 02:15:16 PM
Im planning to drag myself into the 21st century and buy a Zumo 660 but am finding the bluetooth side of things a bit of a minefield. Not worried about phone connectivity or listening to music just want to hear the directions. Any recommendations?

I have been using the BMW navigator 1V (Garmin 660 equivalent) together with a Scala Rider FM for over a year now and it is superb. I also use it for telephone calls and those who have called me say that the quality of transmission is better than the hard - wired, professionally fitted installation in my car.

It is so good that I have not used the Autocomm (fitted to a different helmet) since I bought the Scala. One problem that I did have however, was that the first unit that I bought would not charge. It was replaced by the dealer (Seastar Superbikes) who supplied both it and the GTR.

The second unit has been trouble free (so far) and will last 4 - 5 days of touring before recharging is needed.

I don't use the FM radio, but it did seem to work well enough when tested.

having just ebayed out my 550 im just about to pull the trigger on a 660 and still waiting to find a good price. I did see them on amazon for 319 but it was an 18 hour sale and im hoping they will repeat it v soon

personally i dont use the bluetooth as i find the instructions in my helmet just too distracting, I just use it silent but have a mount higher up that is much easier to see at a glance .

I've steered away from having a separate sat nav..

I upgraded my phone to the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active which is waterproof.

I installed TomTom sat nav on to it, and now have the best of both worlds.
All in one

What's your budget? Rusty recently bought a Bluetooth system for his BMW helmet, £300 approx., works like a charm apparently and he highly recommends it.

Hi all

Thank you for your suggestions. Debs idea is brilliant but just renewed my phone contract. Will probably go either for the star com  or scala.

Starcom is a hard wired system (to your helmets) it does offer Bluetooth functionality through a BTM 02 (dongle) for your Sat Nav and MP3 etc.,

Scala is Bluetooth function and no wires, I suppose it depends on your preference, I got tired of plugging and un-plugging my Starcom, the Bluetooth equipped option is easier in my opinion

You tube offers good demonstrations of the various units available in the market place
