For years I used a TomTom Sat Nav device on my bikes, and very good it was too
I changed to a Garmin Zumo 660 in July last year and after familiarising myself with it I find it to be very good, it does however, choose different routes to the TomTom over the same journey, which can be confusing
Recently my Zumo has been choosing different routes to complete the same journey between two points on the same day, sometimes taking the motorway/Autobahn and sometimes choosing a back street route, 'B' roads and lanes which appear to access farm yards, which is most odd :hammer:
I haven't changed the "route Preferences" or "avoidance settings" (its set to faster time) I can't understand why it would behave this way.
Question is ~ have any other Garmin Zumo 660 users experienced similar behaviour from their device ?
Roger, have you got the latest software update?
I thought you'd appreciate a bit of variety in your routes.

Yep, I have got that Chris, my 660 isn't a LM model so I thought I'd update it and did so about 3-4 months ago.
I too was wondering if this apparent malfunction had anything to do with the software.
This last week we were in Belgium and the device kept choosing different routes for the same/similar journey...odd really

:mfr_lol: I do Steve, but enjoying a variety of routes isn't quite the same as being on a Magical mystery tour :mfr_lol:
i thought that all satnavs did this from time to time. My car one which isnt a tomtom or garmin can sometimes take me to a customers house one way and back home a different way. It did it today actually and when i ignored it and went back the original way it only added 1 minute to the time calculation. going back home the same route isnt always the same distance as your outward journey, roundabouts , dual carriageways can all add a few hundered yards to a journey and if there is only a minute , the satnav will do what its programmed to do and find the quicker route , even if its only minutes, satnavs dont consider traffic lights and other obstacles that acyually make one route slower than another, they assume you will do the max speed for each road with no stoppage time
Good points viper, however mine seems to have become very much more erratic recently, the variations of route choice were quite literally Autobahn followed by back roads and farm tracks, the difference in actual traveled mileage was also quite considerable.
Back it up (ue Garmin Express) Update Maps and software.
Hard reset (total user data delete)
Before you start:
Connect the unit with your computer over the USB connector.
Do not press "cancel" when it makes the gpx file
If you have an archive with tracks ( /Garmin/GPX/Archive/ ....gpx) copy all of your archives to your computer by hand.
To perform the reset:
Turn off the unit
Keep your finger firmly pressed on the bottom right corner of the touch screen
While keeping it pressed, turn the unit back on
After a little while (30 sec?) you get a question on the screen "do you want to erase all user data" > Select "Yes"
All data like routes and waypoints, plus your personal settings are now reset.
After startup you can re-import all routes and favourites again, and/or place the archive files back
If OK create another backup.
