Title: Water in the fuel tank
Post by: PCguru on October 28, 2013, 12:26:53 AM
Hi folks,

I have 2009 GTR and have noticed that after rain, when the bike is on it's side stand, when the fuel cap is opened there's a shedload of water that quite merrily flows from the cap surround into the fuel tank. Has anyone else noticed this or is it my fuel cap that's knackered?

The bike has been stood outside for the past 2 weeks whilst I've been on holiday etc. Come to start it tonight and it ran long enough for me to get 50 yds and then died. Fuel warning was flashing, since I didn't fill it on my return home from work before going on holiday, so got a can and put a gallon in it. Now it won't even try to fire up & I'm assuming it's drawn the water from the bottom of the tank into the fuel system.

Is there an easy way of draining this water from the tank or am I gonna have to strip the entire bike (he asks, expecting the answer "It's completely knackered and you'll need to take it to a dealer")

I am a C & G qualified mechanic, btw, though haven't been on the spanners for 15 years now.

Anyone any experience with this already?

TIA!

It does sounds as if your bike has got symptoms of water ingress into the fuel system.

Tank removal isn't too difficult, although I wouldn't be sure about how to clean out any water out of the injection system and I'd strongly recommend that you get the bike uplifted to your local dealer.

I see that you are in the N.W ..which is your local dealer ? is it MCO bikes in Wigan ?
Good luck

This happened all of the time on my BMW if it was outside in heavy rain, however seemingly without any ill effects - maybe the quantity was less. Water will always migrate to the bottom of the tank, with fuel floating on top of it - this is the reason for draining a sample of fuel from tanks on light arcraft before start - up.

In my view, there is probably little that you can do except purge the whole fuel system with clean fuel after draining the tank, if the contamination has reached the injectors.

Hi O.C.

I'm in Manchester, but bought the bike from Autorama in Yorkshire. Not quite sure where my local Kawa dealer is, tbh!
Will have to investigate.

My advice is to Ring Brian Alford at Autorama, I've known him for many years, he will help you, as they supplied the bike I think its best to go back to them with the problem

Alternatively try here they are a very friendly and capable dealership, but try Brian first, tell him Roger in the Lakes suggested ringing him
