Title: spark plugs
Post by: KENNETH0405 on October 20, 2013, 08:44:53 PM
Hi looking for some clarification on the dreaded spark plug issue the beast is coming off the road soon for the winter , a good time to do some tinkering (me think) she has done just over 13k should I change or just extract and clean/check them along with a oil change etc
Any advice please all  :devil2: :devil2:

Hi

I think the service manual says change the plugs @ 16-18k miles, if they are iridum plugs they should be ok for a lot more than that.

its a fair bit of work getting to the plugs, so if the bike is running good id leave them be, plugs are good for 40 / 50 k. I think most change them to iridium when they have the valve service done at 24k

Yeah, if you have plenty of time on your hands and want to tinker then go for it, but don't do it just for the sake of doing it, there's no need.
Are the original plugs iridium? If so I'd just forget about them.

If it aint broke ~ don't fix it, Iridium plugs are good for 25000 + miles

Some say even 40-50k miles.

If you're giving the bike a bit of a strip down it might be worth taking them out just to check the electrode and gap, and give the threads a dab of copperslip so that they don't end up seizing in the head over time. If they look good then I'd bung em back in. no point changing them for the sake of it.

If you have gone to the time and trouble to to get the plugs to check them then given a new set of plugs cost next to nothing (@£40) why not replace them???

It will save you having to go back and change them later
