Title: MotoGP: was the Marquez pit penalty OTT?

Was the penalty Marc Marquez incurred bigger than the crime? Was it too much? Was it OTT?

He missed the pit window by one lap and was disqualified from the race. Was the 2 lap window too small?

MotoGP riders don't have radio's so rely on pit boards, which is difficult doing 200+mph. Marquez was not the only rider penalised.

Could race officials have waved a white flag to indicate the opening of the pit window? Would this have helped?

Marquez wasn't robbed of the championship but he did lose his unassailable lead.

I feel very sorry for Marquez, someone made a mistake, but IMO the penalty he incurred was bigger than the crime. It was OTT.

But it's made for an exciting end of season hunt for the championship.

A total cock up... And I still can't get my head around why Pedrosa ended up second

As I understand it the rules where quiet clear, as was the penality. You could argue the windows wasn't long enough to take various things into account like missing your pit board etc etc. I thought the debate by the commentors on when do you complete was interesting.

Hopefully it will be better managed the next time they use that approach.

i understood the rules and was only a viewer on TV, so why did his team mate and most of the field manage to come in within the specified laps. An organisation like Honda should really communicate with each other which ever side of the garage you are on, mis-managemant in my view i would be asking serious questions of the team principal. The organisers of the event knew that the tyres would not last much more than 10 laps that is why they said no more then 10 laps on the same tyre for safety reasons. i wonder what sort of comments we would have had if he seriously hurt himself or others because of tyre degredation. We do not need flags or any other communication other than pit boards, he obviously saw his pit board on lap 10 at 200mph saying BOX  other wise he would probably stayed out for another lap.

It was the correct decision, Marquez will bounce back for years to come, the guy is seriously gifted.

Vettel on four wheels , Marquez on two wheels, get used to it, lets hope it does'nt get boring.  :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:

Reading this MotoGP Link (http://www.motogp.com/en/news/2013/Marquez+Phillip+Island+2013+race+review) it seems like Honda had planned for Marquez to come in on the 11th lap.

However, I wonder if the rider's habit of saying 'we did this' and 'we did that' when they talk about themselves riding the bike, helps spread the blame in this instance.

1 gripe!

If your going to post race information, please at least place Spolier in the title.....

I stayed off FB to avoid the result only to stumble on the topic on here!     Grrrrrrrrr......

Anyway, Race direction was wrong to limit the race.... MotoGP organisers were wrong to go with a 1 make tyre manufacturer........

At the end of the day, they should have just said, there must be a bike change... These guys complain enough about bike settings as it is, let alone giving them an excuse!  Oh my second bike wasn't the same.......  GET ON AND RIDE THE DAMN THING.......!

I agree with Neil, its a pisser when a result is revealed before you've had chance to watch the programme, but I'm sure that Stephen meant no harm with his post.

Marquez is a very, very talented young rider, but he has clearly got a lot to learn about the finer points of GP riding, which means he needs to understand the rules and also needs to wind his neck in before he skittles any more fellow competitors into the kitty litter, because one day he might just cripple someone.... or worse, he is young talented and impetuous.

And NO, I don't feel any sympathy for him at all, it serves him and his team right, apparently there were two sets of rules issued in this matter maybe he/and his team didn't read the second/latest set, or, more likely, they thought they could just be clever and interpret them to their own advantage !

While we are on about that race, can I just say how stupid it was to have a 60km limit so far down the exit lane from the pits..

WTF were they thinking?

Whatever the ins and outs of the rules and the application of them you have to think the last 2 races are going to be far more interesting.

Unusual set of circumstances (Bridgestone to blame there) which led to a set of ad-hoc rules for the riders own safety.

Marcy Marc / Honda fequed up and the penalty was right.

It wasn't as if it was decided mid race, they had all been practicing bike changing and knew they had to pit before end of lap 10.

MM didn't whinge at the time, he was pissed, but knew what he'd done hence his walk to the back of pits being controlled and no hystrionics.

At that level there is NO excuse for messing up.  Championship at stake?  Know and follow the rules temporary or otherwise.

If he'd blown a tyre out / crashed / seriously injured / killed himself what would that have done for the sport.

It is afterall, only a game

This, alledgedly, is Marc's tyre after he came in on lap 11. As Winston says, this could easily have been a nasty incident.

Riding with a tyre like that does nothing for his obvious natural talent and will only end up with him becoming known as "an accident looking for somewhere to happen " which wouldn't do him justice

Oh well I suppose he's just very young and full of testosterone  :mfr_lol:
