Title: GPS Navigation on a Mobile
Post by: Debs on October 20, 2013, 07:05:10 AM
I have the Nokia Lumia 800 with Nokia Drive already installed.. It supposed to be a good GPS App but  I think its a pile of  :shit:

It won't find any addresses outside of the UK, even though all the maps are there.

Can anyone recommend a Mobile phone that has a great navigation app please

Hi Debs, Google maps has always been great for me in the UK, but probably won't be any good for you overseas due to the data usage unless you have it on your phone deal. A mate of mine used  a free app for navigation abroad recently and said it was good, with no data usage. I'll find out what it was called for you.

Debs, I too have the Nokia Lumia 800 and I agree its a pile of  :shit:

Out of interest have you downloaded pictures from it to your computer..I'm finding it difficult to do this either on windows photo gallery or on dropbox

What system have you used ?

My contract is up for renewal early November and I reckon the Samsung Galaxy S4 is the way to go

I have a Macbook Pro and once the phone is plugged in I open the Windows Phone app on the comp and can transfer pics really easy.. I don't know how to do it on a Windows PC tho.

My contract is also up for renewal next month and want to know which phone to go for with GPS Navigation...

Unfortunately apps designed for iphone & android will not work on a :shit: windows phone.. I wish I had never got it, but I had alway had Nokia phones and didn't know this one was a windows based phone until I had got it..

Not sure about the Nokia, it doesn't have much market share so there is not a lot of choice for mapping apps. But, since you asked about 'recommendations for a mobile phone' then...

Google Maps (http://www.google.co.uk/mobile/maps/) on any Android mobile phone (and perhaps Apple's iOS) is free and comes with great navigation - but you need to be online. I use this on the bike in the UK using the Voice only navigation through Bluetooth. Worked fine in Europe too using Three's £5/day all-you-can-eat data roaming charge.  There is an option to store parts of the maps offline, but these don't work with navigation.

When driving in Switzerland which doesn't support the Three.co.uk £5/day roaming option, I used the Sygic app (http://www.sygic.com/en) as it does not require an online connection. I believe that Sygic uses the TomTom maps. It was OK, but not as clear as the Google one. It's not free, but not a bad price for European maps at £31 with lifetime map updates.

Google Maps (http://www.google.co.uk/mobile/maps/) on any Android mobile phone  is free and comes with good navigation.

I seem to recall Apple switched from using Google Maps to their own maps/navigation app as the standard included app on their iphones but it has had a lot of critisim, I think you can still get Google Maps for iphones as a seperate download.

Thanks all...

These windows phones are really  :shit:

I have been looking at upgrading to the iphone 5 as that does seem to be the best on the market.. Lots of friends have them and have given great reviews. Even some who resisted getting one at first..  I don't want an app that I have to be online though and there are a few that will work offline.

Debs, I used to swear by Nokia's, I loved my Nokia N95 but after it started failing and coupled with horrendous service from Carphone Wharehouse I opted for the Iphone 3GS, followed by the 4 and now the 4s. They are simple to use and great. I love the facetime feature and the imessage, free video calls and texts, who would have ever thought that eh?

I wouldn't got with iPhone. They are hype

You're best getting a Samsung Galaxy S4 or a HTC One. There's plenty of nav software on the Market Place.

Have a garmin-asus a10.  So free gps ...

Is very good gps . Use it in car, bike & even for walking (option offroad also).
Been in france, belgium, germany, netherlands and luxemburg.
Price new was ca 120£ / 150€... so very cheap....
Guess garmin stopped making smartphones now...

Many friends say S3 is great... so think that S4 is even better...:-)
That will be my next one...

Regarding the iPhone, if you do get one, make sure it's a recent one with iOS 7 support, as the older versions do not support true multi-tasking, which means every time you leave the navigation app, it closes down. Could be a pain if you are switching between apps, e.g. to take a picture, browse Google or FarceBook whilst parked up.

Debs

I used to be a huge Nokia fan.  Then went to Samsung Galaxy SII and frankly haven't looked back.  it's as powerful as my laptop!

Anyway, in terms of offline navigation, on the Android system there is Sygic which is quite good.  I've googled a little and there seems to be some talk of it's availability for the Lumia.  I was unable to find it on their website whilst having a very quick look, though...

Anyway, if you're looking at the S4, look at the S4 Active (http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/mobile-devices/smartphones/android/GT-I9295ZAABTU) before you buy it :)  it's basically the same but IP67 and dust proof etc. and feels nicer (more solid with actual buttons on the front) than the stock S4.

Cheers

Ros

I have an i-phone and downloaded the Tom Tom app it has been brilliant all over europe had it for two years and in that time have used it frequently. Much better than google maps and has IQ and updated maps comes with the package. I have used it on my bike in Spain, France, Andorra, Germany without any hiccups what so ever. The Sat Nav feature works without any phone signal so there is no cost implications at all.

I recently went from iPhone 4 to Galaxy S4. The galaxy is a much better phone, although not as intuitive as the iPhone. Better navigation, better camera etc.

If anyone is thinking of buying the Sygic offline Sat. Nav. application for Android, then it's currently offering a free years subscription to traffic.  Offer valid until the 25th Nov. 2013
