Title: I am new but...
Post by: ChrisB on April 10, 2011, 10:32:03 PM
I am new to this GTR forum and pretty green when it comes to any forum or high tech computer thingys.
However I think a site like this could do us all a favour or two. Dare I suggest that we each tell what line of trade or business we are in so that we could offer help and adviced to members of the forum?
While I cannot give advice in certain areas, I am qualified and experienced in may aspects of financial services, particularly debt management, Insurance and complaints handling. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask, otherwise I will not intrude on the subject any further. Cheers ChrisB..

Chris, good idea. Generally forums such as this offer the user anonymity to whatever extent they care to excercise.
I personally dont have an issue with people knowing what I do for a living, they either accept me for who I am, or they dont ;D

Dare I start this off......I have a background in criminal law.  ;)

I deal in anything relating to " Quick , dial 999 and ask for Police " ........

Putting your location may help generate some work from guys on here as finding a competent tradesman is difficult - assuming you are competent (only kidding)

I'm an IT boy as well.
I know SQL databases, document management systems, and more recently Radiation Oncology (Radiotherapy) management systems as well as a fair bit about general and corporate IT.
I'm a fair to middlin' mechanic (know GTR1000 inside-out), qualified electronics engineer and a radio-ham.
I speak fluent Francais, middlin Nederlands & Deutsch and basic Svenska.

NB, I can help you on this one. Are you talking the complete staircase, i.e. steps, hand rails, newel posts etc? I had a quote to do mine about two years ago and the guy wanted just under £1000 labour, £1900 for the total job. That didnt include the steps as they were ok, I just wanted the spindles, handrails and newel posts replacing. In the end I told the guy to take a walk and did it myself because he was suggestuing he was going to do a bit of a botched job.

I served an apprenticeship in Cabinet Making when I left school and although I had to buy a few basic tools and hire a compound mitre saw I still managed to do it for about £700 all in. I was very happy with the result too, more importantly so was the wife, every now and again you have to shock them dont you?

It'll be new stairs and spindles only. I'm hopeless at DIY so would rather get someone it to it, but don't want to get conned

How old are you Pembs??
Do you remember "Tomorrows World"? The science & Technology program of yesteryear!!
I remember one of the old ones (late 80's early 90's I reckon) where someone was making gas/diesel engines run on water with the help of additive "X". Supposedly trialing with Foden trucks. Obviously never went anywhere due to additive "X" being a bringer of death or an Oil/energy company bought and shelved it!

I could really do with some of that right now £1.32 pfff, as could many others  ;D
