Not having owned a bike for many years I wandered if you guys and girls could give me a few pointers on questions to ask when purchasing a second hand GTR.
I didn't expect to be getting one until after Xmas but there's a 2010 just come up locally, this is it:
Engine Size: 1400 cc
Colour: Brown
Year: 2010
Mileage: 11921 miles
Good condition machine with 11921 miles on the clock and full dealer service history. This is the later updated model with specification that includes ABS, traction control, heated grips and a higher windscreen now fitted as standard. Accessories fitted include a Givi colour co-ordinated topcase. The bike has also been lowered and fitted with some handlebar risers, but we are able to put back to it´s original spec if required. Complete with a 6 month warranty and road fund license and 1 year MOT. Please note this vehicle is not at our showroom so please call to arrange a viewing.
£8295.00
Hi, the obvious and immediate questions I would be asking are is the preload shock adjuster seized, they'll probably bluff you and say no, I'd be surprised if it isn't as they need regular tweaking to keep then free.
I'd want to ensure there was no indication of warping in the discs, yet another common problem experienced by many GTR owners.
Does the bike come with Kawasaki extended warranty, (worth its weight in gold).
Are the tyre pressure sensors in full working order, if not negotiate an exchange of unit prior to purchase.
Has it had the rear brake pedal safety recall completed?
Lift the seat and check where the seat hits the tank, is there any corrosion.
The black exhaust is prone to paint flaking, check it thoroughly as a new one will set you back over £600.
That's all I can think of at the moment, don't let any of that put you off, the bike is a brilliant machine.
There is another that will perhaps be coming up for sale on here shortly. Worth considering ...http://www.gtr1400.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,3437.0.html (http://www.gtr1400.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,3437.0.html)
Thanks guys. I've posted in Vipers thread regarding his machine.
Regarding the exhaust paint flaking, is there an after market alternative that looks in keeping yet doesn't sound like an elephants arse on an atkins diet?
Thank you for the input. Its a great list to be armed with.
The Beowulf cans are popular. Fit well and well made. Sound louder than the original (not difficult) but certainly not aggressive. Very pleased with mine
Welcome to this forum Gavala which is a great place for you to research the Pro's and cons of the superb GTR.
Firstly I would agree with the comments from Lonewolf
I notice that you've said that you haven't had a bike for many years, and that leads me to ask what bike experience have you had, on what bikes, and just how long ago was it ?
I don't want to p*ss on your chips but the GTR is a big, heavy and very powerful machine which is capable of catching out the unwary rider, that's not to say it isn't a great machine to ride, in fact just the opposite applies, but if you haven't ridden for many years it may be quite a shock to your system
I'm assuming that as you're coming back to biking that you are planning to do some touring which the GTR will take in its stride, if so then the GTR is a stunning bike to own,
Anyways good luck with your search
Hi gavala.
Curious to know if the GTR you've seen was advertised IATA a shop in Exeter called speedthrils? If so have you bought it ?
Not many '10 plate GTR's around for sale or am I not seeing wood for the trees?
The January issue of Ride magazine (out mid Nov) is going to have a Full Buying guide feature on the GTR14, if you want to wait you'll see what they say.
As above really although I don't find the bike heavy at all.
I would suggest taking it for a test drive first

:agree: a test ride is essential...by "heavy" I was referring to Kerb Mass (304Kg) not the way the bike rides which is like a much lighter machine
