Title: GTR/twin end can's
Post by: tapps on October 07, 2013, 10:05:10 AM
I took my xjr out today, didn't use the gtr as I have a trapped nerve in my upper arm/shoulder,i went up bury hill (whiteway's) car park,a guy pulled in on a brown/metallic gtr1400 with 2 x two brother's endcan's,it looked superb with the additional can on the left hand side, why didn't Kawasaki fit the pair as standard,he told me he's an engineer & he done the work himself,he also had a pair of led running light's situated in the air intake's.i was told you cant fit the additional end can as the driveshaft would be in the way.well i'm sorry mr Kawasaki (IT CAN BE DONE).

Yep I agree....the twin pipe set up improves the look of the GTR massively

Muzzy do a conversion kit which includes main stand modification, but its not cheap at around £1500.00

I imagine if you are a competent fabricator it could be done, but its possible that centre/main stand modifications will be required

tapps, it certainly can be done, if you have a look at Steph's GTR from last years (successful) GTR meet you will see he has twin pipes on his beast.

Many of our American brethren have done this using the ZZR1400 headers.
You will need to buy some O2 simulators and modify your centre-stand as well as make a bracket for the left silencer but it can be done.
Way cheaper than the Muzzy system but a fair bit of work and you still need the simulators for the Muzzy system as the US bikes don't have Lambda/O2 sensors.
Also, the O2 simulators (fools the Lambda sensors into thinking the CAT is still there) are not perfect so it may affect performance.
I dunno if the ZZR-1441 headers would fit as they have CATs and the sensors.
With any luck they are a bolt on for the GTR.

When I was a 'Yoof' it was all the rage to bin the twin silencers and fit 4 into 1's - Now you want to go back the other way :mfr_lol:

What about the three into one systems Chris..they might look good, sound good, but apparently damage the breathing and performance of Triples

Personally I prefer the 4 into 1 approach.

Nicer sound to my ears, a good weight saver, and makes the bike a bit narrower and takes up less room when I'm trying to put the bike in the garage.

It's one of the things that attracted me to the GTR.

Like all things... horses for coarses...

Agreed!  You were supposed to retune them or face the consequences!

Only did it once - GS550E (awful bike) when I got it the down pipes were damaged so I had them replace with a Marshall 4into1 as part of the deal.  Went OK but it wasn't 'standard' which I like.

Only other one was the GTR which was Beowulf'd

The 4-2-2 systems like on the GTR1000 and ST1100/1300 give better low RPM scavenging which leads to better low RPM torque, a desirable feature in a large tourer.
4-2-1 systems like the 1400GTR give better mid-range torque so suit sports bikes and STs.
4-4 systems (or 2-2 or 3-3) suit top end power and are mostly only used on pure race bikes.

GS550Es were overweight and underpowered, and that was before people who knew better started fiddling with them.
On my GS I removed the 4-2-1 system and replaced with a 4-2-2.
I then threw away the "performance" air filter and retuned the carbs.
Gained nearly 10Mph on top end and so much easier to ride at low RPM.
This was Betsy on the day I got her. On a good day she was "Betsy the babe" and on a bad day "Betsy the  :censored: :censored:  :shit:"

Same colourways that my GS 550e was!  The bike was probably OK, but a young Hoody, with no mechanical know-how found that the forks when compressed didn't rebound, in fact stuck down.

In retrospect I now believe that a spacer had been omitted when the front wheel was replaced at tyre change time (when I got it from the dealers) and the fork legs were therefore not 'true'

And an aside, mine never had a name but my best mate at the time who also had one, nick named his Black Bess (renamed Bess when he painted her purple, and then Black bess when returned to black but no decals!!!?)
