Title: Gear changer location
Post by: Greg on September 25, 2013, 02:45:35 AM
Hi everybody,

I'm seriously looking at buying 2013 model but I have a problem with my left foot after taking out the side of a car 8 or so years back.

I owned Suzuki bandit 1250 but after changing jobs which increased my gear changing 10 fold by mid week I was struggling to do gear up shifts.

Do you guys think I could modify the gear lever to create a heel changer lever?, there's no dealer close to go and check this out myself.

Thks Greg

Welcome Greg, I hope you find this forum friendly and informative.

Regarding your gear shift issue...have you considered something from a company like this  ?

Good luck and do let us know how you get on...just click the link

Greg,

Loads of room on the gear-change side for such a thing. Excuse the filthy state of the bike.

Either that or else get a new FJR1300AS.
Has built in push button gear changer and apart from in stop/go traffic is smooth and seamless.
Also has the gear lever so you can use either.
No clutch though.

Or a VFR1200  dual clutch box..........................................Naaaaaaa  I'd go with the GTR any day

I'm not sure if this would help but it is easy to switch the OEM shifter to a racing configuration that would allow you to stamp down to shift up and then lift up to shift down. You would still be using your toe though and not your heel. You just need to swap the crank 180 degrees to the other side of the shaft.

Thanks everybody,

VFR1200FD one left in Perth but dealer can't return my email / calls to revise my trade in, and that's lead me to investigate other options.

Yamaha discontinued there auto model in Australia ... can't believe they didn't sell enough.
(any manufacturer :censored:)

Found a dealer with 1400GTR feels nice sitting on it but no demo ... looks like I could configure something up of the shifter.

Having a look at FJR1300A tonight on the way home it's a demo but pissing down at the moment so not likely to let me out on it.

I have seen the solenoid changers but it's a bit ugly but if I need to I'll have to hoping the heel lever will do.

Thks Greg

+1 for changing to race pattern gearchange (1 up 5 down). No modification (or cost) involved. Just undo the clamp that holds the tie rod to the gearbox shaft, pull it off, rotate 180 degrees and put it back on. You will probably need to re adjust the tie rod to get the lever in a position to suit your foot, hey presto.  Takes 10 minutes and a 10mm spanner.

Took a second hand 2010 model I think 38,000k on it for a spin tonight ... Very impressed makes the FJR1300 a joke !, gear shift nice and light easy to flick between gears, the fjr you really had to jam it in or you'd be stuck between gears, gtr feels a lot lighter to put into corners, light clutch lever also, if I can get the trade for my Tmax it's mine. Be easy to modify the shifter lever. May go for the one I rode what are these like @ 40,000k on them ?

Bulletproof. Mileage does not seem to worry the GTR. Mine has 72,000km on it and not a sniff of any problems.

Here in the UK, 24,000 miles (38,000km) is the big valve clearance service, so worth checking to see if that has been done or not. £500-£600 service, so worth negotiating.

Martin.

40k is nothing. The 08 model I had was hitting 50k and the engine felt wonderful

Yup, mine has 54k and goes like stink.
The motor is a detuned ZZR1400 lump so should be good for 250k miles.
You'll have electrical gremlins aplenty eventually, but so far on mine the only gremlin was a badly made clutch friction plate that dies a few weeks after the warranty expired,.... not that it would have made any difference as they are apparently considered a consumable item.
