Title: Working on GTR disaster
Post by: Kwikasfuki on September 03, 2013, 05:18:08 PM

Thought I'd work on the GTR and make sure everything was up my standards and not dealer standards  :whistling:

Started working on the front wheel. Clean up calipers, new bearings and seals. Stuff I've done before.

First disaster happened undoing the caliper bolts. The dealer had overtightened one. So much so that the hex socket I was using snapped. The sharp end caught my thumb. Cue lots and lots of blood. Thankfully was able to remove the broken bit that was now stuck in the bolt. Got another hex socket and tried very slowly to open. Was I happy when it did. Ironically the dealer had copper greased the bolts. Obviously no idea on how to torque them correctly.

Given the bike has been serviced entirely by a dealer throughout its life, the seals had never been cleaned. Full of dirt and grime and a mission to get off as they had some how bonded in the recess.

Onto the bearings. Got them out easy enough. Put the first one in OK. Inserted the collar and somehow managed to insert the other bearing in at an angle. Had to take it out by hitting the centre brace, rendering it useless. Back to the local dealer to get another, and just my luck, they don't have one.

So yesterday went by Brammers and picked up two new ones again. Started all over again as I didn't want to mix bearings. Put the first one in OK. Time for the second one. Concentrating too hard on not screwing this one up. Yes, got it in fine. Then  :censored: , forgot to put the collar in. Hammered it out again, rendering it useless

So third attempt maybe tonight. Had to buy another bearing to put in. Can't believe my level of incompetance. At this rate I'll be over qualified to work at a dealers.

I'd be dangerous if I had a toolkit at my disposal. Bikes go to a local workshop for everything and anything! No, wait a minute, I did manage to put a new headlight bulb in myself

Nigel, I never realised that your bike was in such poor mechanical condition and needed so much work doing to it, I'm surprised you managed to travel up North and get round Scotland that week.

I think after the 24th of this month I should be available. Well, that all depends on how well this weekend goes

So.

1. Replace front bearings and seals
2. Replace rear bearings and seals
3. Fully grease driveshaft and rear wheel splines
4. Retorque header bolts (replace with locking ones)
5. Retorque engine mounts
6. Replace potato launcher
7. Do 24k service
8. Put on remaining accessories from the 08 model
9. Replace screen
10. Replace seized adjuster (under warranty)
11. Get suspension setup
12. Remap ECU - maybe stick on PC as well?

4 & 5 in the list are due to the slight vibes I get, although changing the front wheel bearings have helped immensly so I may do these only if I get bored.

Oh yeah, I'm also looking for a second hand cheap telly to stick in the garage so I can stream maintainence videos off the net. Anyone else done this?
