Title: Finally getting a HD bike camera
Post by: patrick on August 20, 2013, 10:34:18 PM
After recently getting a pro-spec HD camcorder I'm now waiting for a quote for a PC to edit the hd video and decided to look into a HD bike cam.

I happened to see a post by my Rospa Examiner on facebook tonight. He uses the Drift HD (1080) Cam and his post said its on sale at 179 but its actually now £149.

Order placed!

Patrick, I recently upgraded my laptop as my old one was dying a slow death. I like the Sony Vaio range which is what my old and new one is. £900, Windows 8, took some fathoming out as my old one was Vista but I've got to grips with it now and so far seems very capable of handling the HD footage.

I've got a contour HD camera with GPS that I've only used for skiing and diving so far.

The GPS is great as it overlays onto a map when you use the software from the manufacturer.

The picture quality is great and it turns on and off with one big slider that is easy to use with gloves.

Its waterproof and came with a clear hard case for diving

I tried bit of video editing but packed it in after about an hour of being frustrated

Has anyone found any easy to use editing software ?  I'm not that stupid but am very impatient !

I've only ever used pinnacle studio for editing, and I've used several versions, often buying a previous edition when the next generation comes  out.

Im on version 14 now and that should handle the HD data. The new pc will have windows 7 for reliablility, 64 bit (what ever that means!!) to allow it have 16gb of ram, 2 huge hard drives, high spec video card, 2 video outlets and a firewire card to allow me to still use my mini DV camcorder that has a bullet cam input  so I can  have a rear bike cam if i wanted.

Im expecting it be priced at around 800.

I suspect that once i have the new pc that I'll get version 16.

I've a question re large data files from an hd cam. If i have, for example, a file that is a 20 minute continuous clip and i only want to keep a 5 minute segment how can i split the file? I can make a 5 min film in pinnacle but that keeps the orginal data file

Any suggestions?

Patrick, in Studio 14 there is an option to delete unwanted files. In one of the headers there is an option where you can either delete them from the pinnacle folder or you can delete them from the Pinnacle folder and your hard drive thereby freeing up space.

I think it's worded something like, delete auxiliary files, if you click yes, it asks you to confirm from Pinnacle only or everywhere.

I take it you are aware that there is a split clip button in Pinnacle to reduce any video clip down to any size?

An apple mac is the way to go, use an external hard drive to save the original. Use iMovie to edit the movie then save it....all done in about half an hour...............its just the snail upload thats the problem......

I've even used iMovie on the iPad and its very simple to create quick videos. Now I've got used to pinnacle 16 that's pretty easy as well, although I haven't got to grips yet with all its features.

There's an adapter which plugs into the side of the iPad. Put the SD card in that, it copies the video footage over into your photos and then just import the footage into iMovies.
