Title: Good bye GTR
Post by: howard on August 17, 2013, 10:47:42 AM
The GTR is going, one days for sale in France where i live and its sold. Four years of fun and reliability. Hope fully next March i will have saved up to buy my next bike,
Possiably a BMW 1200rt, lots of good reports about them so we shall see. The pillion seat on the RT looks very bum friendly, you can tell by this remark who influnces me getting a RT.

Howard, I ride a RT a lot and they are not a patch on the GTR, in fact the only thing I do like about them is the seat. The GTR is a much better bike IMHO

It's like there's something in the water, a mass exodus to the other side, we're all doomed, doomed I tell you.  :mfr_lol:

and the  :shit: is just as deep  :mfr_lol:

I have to agree about the RT which does have a great riding position but also has what I felt was a bloody aweful Boxer engine, having said that twins aren't for me  :nono:

Cant stand the RT's, did a hundred miles the other day on one quite new and couldn't wait to get off it, my wrists were aching and I found my knees aching as well which I don't get with the GTR. And the vibrations were awful. The boxer engines are thirsty, burn oil, a rubbish top end of about 125mph and they just shake a lot.

But other than that, are they ok?

I swapped bikes with my boxer engined friends BMW last week and rode it for about 20 miles, I can best describe the experience as  shocking vibration, noisy exhaust note ( standard one) gearbox was like a tractor, my mate tells us that it guzzles oil at an alarming rate, and pops bulbs for fun. So I was glad of the ride on it, but there is no way that I could spend my wages from the queen on one. How the hell BMW have sold so many bikes in recent years is a mystery to me.

Me too, but we wouldn't be human if we all liked the same things in life

Personally the best thing that the K1300 and GS that I owned did for me was to remind of just how good Kawasaki's really are.  :mfr_lol:

 :agree:

I don't know why they sell so many either.  We all know why we ride the GTR - because they're so much better than BMW's.
I love mine but appreciate the difference between bikes. That's why I chose an XT660z as the second bike.

Sorry to upset these who have migrated but its our forum - I reserve the right to defend the bike I chose to ride and its sad to see posts relating to GTR's being sold  - thank goodness there are plenty of new owners introducing themselves.

Could explain why there are sooooo many for sale, but I guess you have to try these things....

I popped into a bike shop on Saturday looking at the new FJR.....very nice.....   but hang on !  I already have one, and a sports tourer          ( GTR ) thats a little quicker with all the trimmings........

If I wanted to do a bit of adventure riding then I think i would choose the Super tenere, I have a couple of mates who have had GS s and they liked them, said they were a little more comfortable for long rides in this country on our roads and .................well thats it really !!!

We are only here once as far as we know so these things have got to be tried..........enjoy your new ride tommy tool....

good luck with your next bike  but sorry, must agree with others as far as the b.m.w 1200rt is concerned, I ride the b.m.w rt1200 at work  and find it not a patch on the GTR  where I can I start!! first of all it as the boxer engine which will wobble and shake you to  :death: if you ever need the clutch replacing, you need to remove almost everything and split the bikes frame in half to gain excess to the clutch  this is a big job and will take a experienced tech approx 2 days to dismantle, fit the clutch and put it all together again :sweatdrop: with at total of cost including labour of approx £1,800 to £2,000 at a b.m.w dealers, if you are unlucky enough to need a clutch on the GTR then its a few hours job at best! the GTR will ride smoothly in overdrive at 30.mp.h the b.m.w 1200rt engine will not  in fact the at 30 m.p.h the b.m.w will need to be in 3rd gear or the engine will labour and shake you to  :death: but there is a plus side  the screen is quite good  if you haven't test rode the b.m.w 1200rt I strongly suggest you do  I once met a guy in Italy when we on our trip  he had the B.M.W 1200RT and it was only 6 months old when he bought it, he only got it a few weeks before his trip and seen me on my GTR  I asked him what he thought if it, he said he bought the bike with out test riding it and traded in a blackbird. he also said as soon as he gets home, it's getting traded back! most likely for the GTR which he should have gone for in the first place. but he said you know the score, took the blackbird in for new tyres for the trip, wife seen the b.m.w and said this looks more comfortable and it's nearly new and it's time for a change! the none b.m.w dealer said it one of the best tourers around and give me a good deal on the black bird :hammer: now... I've I heard that said many times by dealers trying push the slow sellers  also ... I remember when I had my GTR and I went for a ride on the Sunday, then went into work on the Monday and ridden the b.m.w rt1200 it made me realize what a dam good choice I made getting the GTR  and not the b.m.w with a engine that is as old as me  but not quite as old as GEOFF OR ROGER :mfr_lol:

roger if it's any consolation to you and your slightly more mature friend  I was little surprised at the pace you two older chaps set on our ride out from the bridge  I was expecting my economy light on my ZZR to stay on permanently  but must admit it did flicker a few times :mfr_lol:

I'm a young granddad  by heart anyway  they say your only as old as the woman you feel so I have a lot to  about
