Title: Gear Oil Change Time
Post by: tommytool on August 16, 2013, 08:26:51 PM
I'm going to do a bit of servicing this weekend and after riding back thought I'd drop the gear oil whilst the hub was warm. The oil is 6k miles old and yet it's absolutely clear. I was expecting it to be dark and treacly. I know they add anti scuffing agent which aid the natural shearing wear on the crown wheel but am surprised its this clear. Incidentally I'm replacing it any way with Castrol GL 5 SAE 80/90 gear oil . The filler cap was very easy to unscrew which surprised me as everyone's pbending pound coins on here apparently.

Any ideas?

I think the pixies must have changed it the night before you checked it. It's usually black.

Drained mine when I got it at 9k... Clear...

GL5 went in... 3k later still clear.... Put it down to your ultra smooth riding style.  :smartass:

Hmm, when I did the gear oil change on the old GTR and it was black I was told that that was perfectly normal. I might have to have a look at the oil in the new GTR and see what colour that is this weekend.
