Title: Problems with Hand deflectors
Post by: Boomer on April 05, 2011, 10:32:19 AM
I have had a few problems with my Hand Deflectors over the last few days.

The powdercoating was peeling off so I decided to take them off, clean them up and re-spray them. The brackets cleaned up nicely with a wire brush attachment in a powerdrill so I painted the bare steel with RustEase, Grey Primer (rattlecan) and Gloss black.
They came up alright and I went to fit them back on the bike.
The right side one fitted fine but the left side would not tighten.
Turns out that the "captive" nut had escaped from it's wimpy plastic prison and was just spinning.
So, after some creative and multi-lingual swearing I had a good detailed look.

In the end I cut off the plastic holder for the captive nut and fabricated a new bracket from the mirror mount bolts. It seems to be holding fine.

So, a couple of warnings to all those with the French hand deflectors.

1- The powdercoating is not very good quality and will peel once the steel starts to rust.
2- Check your mounts (under the inner fairing pieces) for signs of cracks. Only seems to affect the lower of the 2 mounts.

A company that i work closely with has the ability to powder coat stuff (they've done it for me previously).....if you need something doing and don't mind spending a little (normally next to nothing) send the bits to me and i'll get it done ;D

For the price paid, I am disappointed with the quality of the deflectors. I have half a mind to get a quote for my local machinist to do them.

be interested to know what they come out at.......might need a pair.........prices might be better if they are making a few sets. Would you alter the design/improve things? ???

TBH, they work fine as they are. Probably follow the same design unless someone can suggest improvements.

FWIW, I'm hopeless at product design

I can help with getting the metal brackets fabricated if i could get hold of a pair (L&R)...but not sure what material you'd use for the deflector part itself...whether it'd be lexan/perspex or other type of material (mind it'll have to be strong and reasonbly rigid to cope with pressure exherted on it)

Let me go speak to my machinist and see what they recommend. It all comes down to cost. It would be good if there was a one size fits all for the old and new models.

Deflectors would be something I'd consider for the right price mines a 2010 model  :)
