Hi, all.
I had a terrifying experience last night so I would like to ask if anybody had an idea of a cause.
I went riding last night and after couple of miles riding, while overtaking a car I experienced a complete blackout.
Lights went off, control panel, went off it was like somebody just suddenly disconnected out cables from battery.
I can't even described the felling when riding over 70 mph in the dark, while overtaking a car, everything went black.
Fortunately for me the car behind slowed down and let me pass aside.
Another lucky thing is that we have anti-hopping clutch so wheel did not blocked while bike was in 4th gear.
After couple of seconds I pressed the key and icon pop up. Bike started like nothing happened.
I was riding more than 30 miles last night without a problem.
I will just add that during blackout even the Kipass LED did not blink when bike went dead.
I spoke with my service guy and he told me couple of possibilities:
1) That I pressed "kill switch" by accident.
- I can swear that this did not happened.
2) Loose connection.
- Never happened before, never had a problem, and bike started after couple of seconds and at present working fine.
3) There was some interference from car electronics to Kipass and car electronics kill the bike power
- Last option looks quite possible but scary.
So please share your thoughts and experiences (if any).
Thanks in advance
Gordan
When I had my other bike, GTR1400, 2009 model. I was riding ok for a while, then as I was slowing down for a junction, The bike went dead. I re-started it and it was fine. When I got home I checked the battery and found one of the connections to be very loose.
It may have been that it just lost connection for a split second and cut the power. Or it may have just been a total coincidence.
Hope you get it sorted though especially if you ride at night.

kill switch only cuts engine, everything else stays on, try it. Id take battery out and clean up terminals and put back, hopefully it was on this. On a car , if you take the battery out the engine and power circuits will still be active, maybe its different on a bike, i will have to try one day , or get your bike running and disconnect the battery and find out and let us know
Its likely to be the battery connections, others have reported loose connections in the past ..check those first
Could be due to Blood pressure drop, ear / balance problems over over tiredness. Best speak to your GP :mfr_lol:
Don't disconect the battery with the engine running as you could fry the ecu with the voltage spike from the alternator!
For the same reason, check and clean the main battery connections, including the main earths and also the starter solenoid heavy duty leads.
This fault must be because of an open circuit on one of the above as you seem to have lost all electrical power.
Hope this helps.
Well, I am riding for last couple of days without any problems.
I checked the battery connections, ground connections, ECU connections and all is solid tight and no loose screws or connections.
I tried the kill switch during riding and , yes, the power was still on, only engine died.
I wonder if that blackout would leave any trace in the ECU for service guy to check in the computer as a fault ?
Since it was one time occurrence and all looks running OK, now, I guess that it would be of no use to take bike to service man, except if there could be a fault recorded somewhere in the ECU.
is there a main fuse on these bikes , something further up the battery line `, could there be a loose there
Any more developments on this fault? I had the same thing happen to me about a month ago. Mine's a 2007 model so its 6 years old this month. Has 35000 on the clock. Today on the way home from work the fault repeated itself only now I can't get the bike to turn on at all. Had to get recovered home. I put a new battery on in June so can't be a faulty battery. Today the fault was as above - had been riding along at about 30 mph - display went dark, hazard warning lights flashed but I could rev the engine. Stopped the bike and turned the key off - couldn't turn back on. Have checked the battery just now and connections were fine, had it on charge for about an hour but still no joy.
Anything fuse-wise I should check?
Both instances sound like a dodgy fuse to me.
Check the Main Fuse,... in fact just replace the Main Fuse and bin the old one.
Hazards will work as they connect through a separate fuse.
Blade fuses are 1000000% more reliable than the old tube fuses, but they ain't perfect.
Boomer - you are a star. Just pulled the fuse holder/relay out and the main fuse has at some point melted! It's also blown but it's damaged the holder so I'll have to replace the lot. I had a regulator blow on me in Spain several years ago - I wonder if it overheated then and didn't blow - the garage replaced the regulator but said nothing about the main fuse.
Also I've had to put my heated grips on recently so that may also be an area for investigation. Anyway - many thanks :)
Phil
You're very welcome.
Had a similar problem years ago with an XS500.
That had tube fuses and although the fuse looked OK, it was an intermittent connection so whenever I hit a big bump, the motor died.
The rec/reg almost certainly went over-voltage so was pushing 16V AC through the fuse which will have cooked it.
Hopefully it didn't damage anything else. You may need to check all the wiring on that line as the insulation may be damaged.
Nice that You sorted this thing out
For me it is still a mystery.
Bike is running well over 2000 km after that incident and did not experienced problem again. :undecided:
Will just credit it to "Black Helicopter / UFO", not think about it and live happily

Saracen, how are your heated grips wired up ?
TrouserSnake - The grips are wired into the back of the 12v power socket - the one that you can plug accessories into. Do you think that could be the problem? The guy in Spain who replaced the regulator mentioned something about the heated grips wiring and disconnected them - I've since reconnected them but haven't had a problem until now.
I ran mine, piggybacked with my cruise control and Autocom from the accessory point with no problems (09 plate)
