Title: Low speed running
Post by: nightrider on July 18, 2013, 10:34:31 PM
When holding a steady speed ,say 30 ish in 3rd or 4th gear  the bike seems like it is surging  back and forwards ,  it holds the speed ok but feels not smooth , is this normal or does it need looking into , I had a power commander  fitted and set up on the rolling road  , so I thought it would have spot on fuelling , any body else have similar symptoms ,,,,,,,,

This is why I don't fully understand why people mess with their bikes fitting power commanders and the like. The bike runs sweet just as it is, doesn't it?

I've experienced something similar in the past and usually found it to be due to me leaving the bike in eco mode around town after I'd used it on the motorway. Not sure if this is right or not, but since leaving the bike in standard mode around town the problem seems to have gone away.

:agree: , Why mess with something that is already good ?? IMO, fitting gadgets such as power commanders could only lead to issues that you would never had to deal with had you left the thing standard.

The reason I had the PCM fitted was to get rid of slow pick up at low revs  also it has made 6th gear pick up as quick as when you are in 5th , if you tried one that has had a PC fitted you would see what a different it makes , I wanted it to have the same power that my 1200 zzr had it now does , this surging will be sorted , I google it and some people on the zx forums have had the same thing on their gtr.  But there was not any answers ,

:agree Totally..... all three of the GTRs that I've had have performed superbly with more than enough power, which was readily available through all six gears.

The GTR is what it is, its not a lightweight superbike, rather it is one than has oodles of power every gear, naturally the GTR has its own characteristics

The GTR will do 0-60 in less than 3 seconds. It'll do 0-100 in about 5 seconds and it'll do 0-150 in.....well I've no idea but five seconds after setting off if I'm doing 100mph I must be in a rush to get somewhere swiftly, just as well I bought a GTR and not a Versys eh?  :mfr_lol:

This used to be called hunting...............your air/fuel mix needs adjusting

Totally disagree with what people are saying about not fitting power commanders especially after changing the exhaust.  I brought my bike with a 'Two Brothers' end can already fitted and it definately had a flat spot around 80mph in top.  Fitting a power commander and time on the rolling road by someone who knows what they are doing has transformed the bike, it pulls like a train through the rev range and is much more useable.

I suppose you are all going to complain that we should never fit after-market exhausts and we deserve what we get?  Personnally I hate standard exhausts but prepared to be shot down in flames :gun_bandana:

Rusty,

How can you expect people to do that on the ZZR/Versys forum, if you want to avoid the mention of the Versys, you'll have to go to a GTR forum  :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:

30 -40 mph in 3rd -4th gear, im not surprised its playing up, far too low a gear, you should be in second maybe thinking of going into 3rd at 40mph, you are putting extra strain on the engine and drive train, not to mention fueling issues. Try and hold it in a gear for longer the engine will be far better for it and the response much better. i have just fitted a two brothers end can, no real difference in power / responce to really speak of and definately no flat spot at 80mph or any other speed, but the looks and sound are awesome.

When doing 30 in a 30 zone you're already riding at the speed limit and shouldn't be accelerating anyway, so why waste petrol using a lower gear?
And why would rolling along at that speed put any extra strain on the engine or drive shaft or cause fuelling issues?
My bike performs well enough in 3rd in town and in 4th in a 40 zone even in ECO mode and I also have an after market can.
And additional to burning less fuel and rubber I don't have to worry about seriously exceeding the speed limit in the blink of an eye if I just move my right hand ever so slightly.
Maybe it has to do with where you come from too.
:listencarefully: I had powerful singles and twins before and my bike before the GTR was a Suzuki 1250 Bandit that developed maximum torque at 2600 rpm, so riding at low revs feels normal to me. But if you have only ridden screamers before that don't come to life until 9000 rpm and stall if you get below 6000 you may feel that something has to go wrong if you get below 2000.

in eco mode I get the same symptoms - on opening throttle low down I get a slight hesitation as if its wondering whether to unleash full power or not.
I don't get this when eco mode is off.
I assume this is normal?

Yes, that is quite normal.
I believe ECO mode is mainly for cruising and that is what you'll most likely be doing over 90% of most journeys.
Of course if you really want to get 'sporty' on the other 10% you better turn ECO off or just switch down a gear or two.
But unless you are riding like the morons in the clip of the 'terrifying' thread it's hardly possible to ride 'sporty' on British roads anyway.
Unless you accelerate from standing you will be seriously over the speed limit in fractions of a second or run out of open road if you fully open the throttle.

I leave the bike in eco mode most of the time, it runs smoother on the throttle through towns where i stay in 2nd below 40mph, I noticed this more when fully loaded going through some french towns where the speed limit can be as low as 30kph, i put it in 2nd gear, switched to eco and you can feel it smooth out.
If some rash riding is required knock it out of eco and you can feel the bike go, and go, and go.
0 - 150 is easily reached out of eco, and the bike will cruise at 120 for miles and miles just above 5500 rpm in eco.
1500 mile returned 50.6 mpg switching between the 2 on occasions, but really isn't required due to the power the bike has anyway.

Well thats in my opinion anyway and you should try these things out if fitted to the bike, so thats what i have done.

I hope this helps

I now have this, spoke to my dealer who asked if I had the plugs changed at 7500 and I replied I didn't as I thought they would last thousands of miles, so I bit the bullet and am getting them done in two weeks and checking the fuelling.

Then I will put the new pipe on and see.

I spoke to the people that mapped it for me , and he said that kawasaki run a loop system on the fueling  and that it sort of shuts down at very low revs , I did not quite follow what he meant , but if you only use 2nd gear at speeds less than 40 if is not to bad , maybe that's why when in Eco mode it leans it off so it is giving it less fuel at that speed ,,,,,,,,

Did I read this thread right?
Wasn't it you who started it by complaining that YOUR bike behaves badly at low revs after you fitted a PC?
While us folks with bog standard GTRs don't seem to have any problems at all riding around in 3rd gear at 30mph even in ECO mode?
So how can it be Kawasaki's fault?
I can't understand why Kawasaki would have an interest in mapping their bike sub-optimally in the first place.
I can understand why people who make a living by selling and mapping PCs try to tell stories like that, though!

Well big al does , and if you google this problem you will find that a lot of gtr owners  have had the same low speed running  symptoms  ,  :2guns:

Is the surging / hunting occurring at the changeover from the closed to open loop FI modes. Don't think this is anything related to Eco mode either as that is a programmed algorithm to control the air/fuel ratio bias towards the lean margin. It's triggered on/ off only by 2 inputs. The throttle position sensor and rpm /gear - or so I believe. Could be wrong.
