Title: Hello and Help (Cam sensor problem now sorted)
Post by: bobbyspit on July 06, 2013, 01:32:45 PM
Hello, I am Rob and I own a GTR1400 2009 in black the blue pearl flake model.

I have used my bike as a daily runner for work and play for 3 years and have 25k miles on the clock and I love the bike.

I now have a problem, the bike is showing a FI warning and on checking the fault codes it says Fault code 23 which is Camshaft sensor, I have removed the sensor and am awaiting the new one from the dealer.

My question how do I clear the fault code from the bike? is there a way to do this?

Any help really appreciated.

Rob

Rob, hi, firstly, you've owned the GTR three years and only now you are saying Hi! Shame on you.  :mfr_lol:

Just an idea but is it possible that when the replacement part is installed on the bike the fault code will disappear and reset itself?

Thanks for the welcome, I did not know this place existed until I went looking for it.

I will give that a go, the bike is in bits atm so will report back once checked,
the GTR has two cam sensors and they are £80 + each so I plan to check wiring first before replacement.

Any idea how to test a sensor?

Rob

Below is instructions on checking the cam sensor, taken from the manual....

Camshaft Position Sensor Peak Voltage
Inspection
•Disconnect the camshaft position sensor lead connector
(see Camshaft Position Sensor Removal).
•Connect the harness adapter [A] between the camshaft
position sensor lead connector and harness connector.
•Connect the peak voltage adapter to the hand tester
[C] which is set to the × 10 V range.
•Connect the adapter to the harness adapter.
[D] Camshaft Position Sensor
•Turn the key knob and engine stop switch ON.
•Pushing the starter button, run the engine with the transmission
gear in neutral to measure the camshaft position
sensor peak voltage.
•Repeat the measurement 5 or more times.
Camshaft Position Sensor Peak Voltage
Standard: 2.8 V or more
If the peak voltage is lower than the standard, inspect the
camshaft position sensor.

Page 662 of the workshop manual,

PS just noticed this is an oldish post so guess you've got it sorted now.

- wouldn't it have been nice to have people come back and update what happened to their bike , how it was sorted (or not) , etc.

- too much to ask , perhaps.

I checked the link and it was how to check the crankshaft position sensor on a car, sort of relates to a camshaft sensor on a bike.

Obviously a poster who only comes on when he needs help.

Sorry guys, yes the test you tube video worked for me and it showed the sensor at the front (cam sensor) the Kawasaki claim its the Cam Exhaust sensor so I guess that is the one that picks up the signal from the exhaust cam. It showed that was knackered.
I bought a new sensor and fitted it and the bike drives better than ever. The fault cleared and is now not showing any fault at all.
So yes the vid works on Cam sensors as well as crank pick up.
Thanks for the assistance guys
Rob
